Effect of buffer size to tape writing speed
I’m curious if the buffer size setting in LTO tape writing software, makes a difference (if any) to the tape writing speed.
For instance, in Bru PE, buffer size can be set to 32k, 64k, 128k, 256k, 512k, 1024k, 2048k. For LTO-6 and LTO-7 drives, we normally leave this at 2048k. I’ve tried at 1024k and it doesn’t seem to make any tangible difference.
The files we backup from disk to LTO, vary from about 700,000 files of 7MB to 450,000 files of 11 MB, from Alexa Arriraw, or Panasonic Varicam Raw, down to just over a thousand files from Red R3D files, or Sony F65 raw. In one LTO-7 tape.
So, should one vary the buffer size based on the type (and number) of files being backed up, or simply leave it at 2048k or 1024k. Also, does this differ from LTO-6 to LTO-7 tape?
