Recently I have discovered a new business philosophy of editing called “Ka-Ching” (no relation to “I-Ching”). Here is an example: I am hired to follow some CEO around all day in case he says something intelligible. No one can be bothered to write a script so I write one that is promptly torn apart by corporate wolves who are always on the phone yet cannot seem to talk to each other. I then wade through mounds of worthless footage to put together something that is mediocre at best, only to have the wolves attack it for endless revisions. Once I would have cursed the fact that I don not keep enough sharp objects around. Through “Ka-Ching” I have come to understand that I was actually given a gift- a project that should have been 12 hours is now 50 and counting… at $150/hour. Thus corporate waste is converted into capital for projects I actually care about, such as non profits with good causes but little money. Thus is the universe brought into balance. I humbly hope that this philosophy helps others as well.

Nicely stated. Though I found the concepts of “Ka-Ching” somewhat difficult to grasp at first, having come from a clock-punching world, I am now a true devotee.

Never underestimate the corporate ego and its ability to revise. We are currently into year 2 of a “quick little video” with billings well into 6 figures. “I live to revise. I revise to live.” (NOT)

That’s the trouble with Broadcast. Some people actually know what they’re doing, and the people writing the cheques know what everything costs.

Someone once said to me: “Everyone in broadast wishes they were in corporate, and vice versa”. I guess the grass is always greener…

I can also testify, after a few years doing them, that corporate video projects for Executives, Boards of Directors and especially HR are always “the gifts that keep on giving.” The axioms “never time to do it right, always time (and $$) to do it over (and over…), and, “We make our money on revisions” also apply.
