June 29, 2012 at 2:35 pmWe have a travel radio and TV show and I edit in the field with a laptop all the time. I shot with Sony A1-U’s and Z1-U’s (HDV)as well as Kodak ZI-8 and Kodak Playsport waterproof (SD cards) cameras.
I have used an HP core 2 duo for years and now I use a Toshiba I7 with 8Gb of ram. It ROCKS! I see very little difference, if any, between that and my desktop machine.
You want to get the highest speed hard drive possible, at least 5200rpm, but 7200rpm is preferable.
You definately want to use a seperate hard drive for your footage.
Cheers

June 29, 2012 at 6:25 pmI’m also doing some editing on the road and found I needed a really fast system. I bought a laptop from IbuyPower.com
Not cheap but you can get a very powerful system with any option that you desire. All of their computers are custom built.Roger Bansemer

July 2, 2012 at 10:28 pmI’m thrilled with my Thinkpad W520. A bit heavy, but a totally professional workstation. High end graphics (nVidia Quadro 1000M 2GB Video RAM but only 96 CUDAs), in the docking station I can run three monitors if you include the laptop one. Easy expansion (DVD drive can be hot swapped for hard disk(!)), which is great for dumping footage in the field. Incredible docking station for desktop use. Laptop has USB3 and eSata, so no need for Thunderbolt, IMHO. Lots of RAM, superb keyboard, fingerprint reader for instant login, almost instant on. Just about the finest laptop I think I’ve ever owned. Now to get it down to 1 pound..(G).But that’s what my phone is for when I need email somewhere else. I’ve been through two Dells and a Samsung in the last two years. Dells have been problematic hardware (but my Dell desktop has not). Samsung was just not a great screen, nor keyboard.
This is what I should have bought in the first place…sigh.
Vegas runs very well on it.
