We are a small four suite post-house that primarily makes TV commercials. We, like many others, are trying to figure out the best way to make our clients happy in this HD transition period. I’m sure I’m not the first to have this question but here I go anyway. We recently had an SD spot of ours accidentally get played on an HD cable channel – the result, P.O.ed client! What does anyone have to offer as far as workflow advice on this? We like to offer our clients speedy turn-arounds and would rather not edit our spots in both HD and then again in SD. Anyone else having to face this problem and how are you handling it?

You’re right. A quick search of this forum would show that this is asked at least once a week.

Basically there are a variety of possible workflows from in house slow to in house fast to outsource. They all depend on commitment to quality, convenience or budget. Please read the many responses and then if you have a more specific question to pose, then fire away.

They’d better not have been mad at you. You give the client what they ask for….if they didn’t ask for an HD tape, then it is not your fault that the SD tape you provided aired on an HD network. It is their fault for not requesting it.

If you shoot in HD, then edit in HD. Then you can output an HD tape master, and then an SD tape master. This is what we do. Output to HDCAM SR and Digibeta. Currently the network we air on only airs SD, but HD is coming, and they are being prepared for that. ALL HD capture cards output to HD and downconvert to SD in real time…so any one will suit you well. I recommend the AJA Kona LHi or the Matrox MXO2…both are VERY versatile cards.
