Editing HDV on iMac G5 1.8GHz 768MB – Call me crazy
I will be forced to edit an HDV project on an iMac G5 1.8 GHz with 758 MB of ram with no possiblity of upgrading hardware. Does anyone have any suggestion on how i can configure Final Cut 5 to make this as painless as possible.
The plan is edit a rough cut on the iMac so we have something to show the client until the calvary shows up with the G5 dual processor.
there isn’t a way to edit in low res using fire wire is there?

I Can edit native HDV on my G4 1.25 ghz Powerbook with 768 RAM. So I don’t think you’ve a problem here.

Capture DV quality now (the camera should have the option to switch from HDV to DV) then capture HDV when the cavalry arrives.

Hi shane,
i have already captured about half of the material (12 hours) in HDV… can i capture the rest in DV and mix the two formats on my timeline? i am thinking it would be safer to stick with what i started with… suggestions?

Stick with what you are doing. you cannot mix formats on the timeline without having to render one of them…

A PowerBook is superior to an iMac because you can add a PCMCIA card. These not only give you more ports, but a whole separate bus to separate HD and deck. Daisy chaining them can be a big problem. Dropped frames is the usual ill.
I don’t like the idea of an iMac (or iBook), as there’s no way to add a PCI card or PCMCIA card.
Good luck though, if the FireWire drive is not working, you’ll have to capture to the internal drive and then transfer it to the external later.

Thanks for the help guys… well everything was going ok. capture went fine. previewing my clips – ok! But now when i render the timeline to view my sequence… it gets all hung up and i have to force quit Final Cut…. the time line is 30 minutes long with about 8 minutes renderend.
any suggestions get a little more out of my machine… i shrank down the viewer and canvas windows to 12% and it seems to run a bit better, but they are soooo small.
i don’t under stand why i can preview a 5 min clip in the viewer just fine but when i put it in the timeline and render, it won’t play without shrinking down the windows?

well… i gave up on trying to edit in HDV. it was just too painfull. so now i am down converting/recapturing in DV… i’ll let you know how it goes 🙂

Hello all
I have been reading and following all the threads related to HDV worflow. I am in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. I am working on an hour long documentray shot completely on HDV using the Sony camera. I have about 22 hours of footage, which I will be looking at tomorrow.
I wanted some suggestions on my workflow. I am working with FCP 5, a G5 dual processor, 2GB, no capture card, but can get one if needed.
I have been deciding to edit native HDV, capture all the footage via firewire onto 500GB FW800 drives. But it seems like almost everyone prefers converting the HDV footage to an i-frame format. but what’s the point of having the native codec, if you are going to convert everything.
Secondly, considering the amount of footage I have, i can’t convert it to a 10-bit uncompressed format. It would take way too much time.
My next option is to downconvert my HDV footage during capture to DV-PAL. Am I going to lose a lot of picture quality? What are the cons if I stay native?
My master has to be a digibeta PAL.
Please advise me on my workflow. I don’t have a capture card, but I can get one if it is essential to my edit and the final output.
