Editing HDV in FCP
Do I need to upgrade my academic version (5.1.4) to be able to capture and edit HD video?
When I go to capture video from my Sony fx7 camera – it wont recognize the video. The log and capture window just captures a black screen….
I have double checked all the settings and they are all set to HDV.
Any help is greatly appreciated! -

You can not upgrade from the academic version. If you have an Intel Mac, you can purchase the latest FCS at full price. This will allow you to capture your HDV footage in the ProRes format. This will make your editing so much easier.
You should be able to capture in Apple’s Intermediate Codec in 5.14.

Thank you so much for your response! I was planning to upgrade – but didn’t know which FCP would be the best to purchase…I am assuming 7.0?
Also – when i try to capture in Apple’s Intermediate Codec – the tape starts playing and then FCP just shuts down every time. Any suggestions!?

Make sure your Mac is up to spec for latest FCP. In 7, you get the entire suite so it’s FCS. You do not need to install all the apps if your don’t want to. Make sure your media is stored on a different drive than your system drive. Make sure you have enough space on media drive for the larger prores files. Capture this way:

The larger file size will not improve your original footage but you can do a search and learn why it’s a better workflow than staying native HDV. Much faster renders. Better graphics. Better work flow when exporting final product.
