editing H264 AVC1
Posted by Grzegorz Kwiatkowski on May 14, 2011 at 7:51 amI am editing mainly native files from Canon 5D (codec AVC1 – H264) and mp4v files from Sony EX. Is there any video card which would speed up render time and workflow?

May 14, 2011 at 12:47 pmAnd one more thing. I read that CUDA cards improve working with AVC footage? Does it mean the preview works better or rendering TO AVC is faster.
If my footage is AVC but I render to MPEG-2, will CUDA card also improve the rendering time?

No video card will improve playback with Vegas Pro. CUDA cards will improve playback with Premiere Pro. On paper, CUDA cards will also improve rendering of AVC with Vegas, but no one has actually recorded any improvement to date. I have an NVIDA Quadro 4000 with 256 CUDA cores and Vegas actually renders slower then I use it.
So the answer to both question with Vegas is essentially NO. 🙁

No, not with Vegas. It has no acceleration for MPEG-2.

The claim is that for very old CPU’s you may see some improvement. So perhaps if you have an old single core Pentium 4 and a new GPU the GPU will be faster. I feel they should be getting more improvement based on what I see other products doing. Let’s hope they figure it out.
