I’ve been given a project by a production company to edit a TV segment on property real-estate and would like to know what project template do I use in Vegas?

The footage will be shot on DIGI Betacam however they will be suppling it to me on a DVCAM tape to ingest.

The production company I’m cutting for uses Final Cut Pro and the editor I spoke to explained to me that when he edits on FCP his timeline sequence for broadcast is set to uncompressed, regardless of the footage he has been given DV or DIGI Betacam.

So I’m a little unsure what setting I would use in Vegas…!

    Do I just use:

    Project Template: PAL DV Widescreen
Pixel aspect ratio: 1.4568 (PAL DV Widescreen)
Pixel format: 8 bit or 32 bit?
    Field order: Lower Filed First?

If the original material is DV/DVcam and you are not going to be doing much in the way of chroma keying and complex DVEs and CC then I would bring the footage in as DV/DVCam and edit native in the DV domain. Once the job is finished you could render back to either an uncompressed avi or PAL SD YUV. The presupposes that you have a Decklink or AJA card with SDI out to go back to Digi-Beta to get maxim mum benefit from going down this path. If you are going back out in fire wire to DV/DVCam then just complete the whole project native in the PAL DV widescreen template. I you have a fair number of graphics, color grads etc in the program then selecting the 32 bit floating point setting in your properties will improve the final render.

Chris, you never let me down….

On this production there won’t be major CC because its being shots by a camera-op that shoots for channel 9 so he is on the ball with his levels/CB. I’ll be making sure its broadcast safe using the waveform monitor however the guys at AVE Artarmon (which you might know) said they have a unit that will make it broadcast safe in the transfer to DIGI Beta anyway.

So in order to ingest DIGI Beta into Vegas I would need a Decklink or AJA card with SDI. What setting do I use when capturing?

And what timeline template would I use if it’s been captured as DIGI Beta?

Sorry if my questions are a little novice, I mainly use Vegas for corporate productions so I’ve never had to know this stuff. The guys at AVE are all FCP uses but I refuse to be a FCP cutter 🙂 especially when I have cut on it before and find I can cut the program in half the time on Vegas (Boy I love Vegas).

My last question, If I just export it out of the Vegas timeline as a QuickTime uncompressed file and hand it to them on a HD, would that be a good idea, this way they can sandwich the segments on FCP and spit it out on their machine which I believe they have a AJA box.
