Editing at home just like we used to do on office QNAP NAS
The title says it, and I apologize if this has been covered but I can’t easily find a thread.
Like so many, we had been happy in the office with multiple workstations editing Premiere on the LAN over 10Gb on our 1685. Then everyone went home, took the workstations and “can” edit over VPN v e r y s l o w l y. To speed things up, files are loaded to local attached drives, recreating same problems we originally solved by buying the QNAP.
I want to revive the experience of shared storage our people used to have in the office. This will most likely require a RAID for each home workstation, a sync routine, etc., with everyone having access to all the files. I have not worked out the magic of the architecture, and I am hoping the hoops have already been jumped through by someone else I am happy to buy as many QNAPS as necessary to make this all go.
My guess is that once again, this is a call to the Zelin universe….

Judging by the silence, it seems there may be no more interest in server based editing these days. Anyway, I came up with a solution to allow my home users to edit at 10 gigabit speed and keep the central server updated. Really a game changer for our workflow.

I don’t think it’s that nobody is interested, as much as nobody had an answer. I sure don’t have one.
What’s the answer you found? Me, I’m dying to know!

Hopefully I did not speak too soon. It’s a combination of Qsync, VPN and a local small DAS for each workstation. Was working great, but now I’m having problems. Inexplicable denials of access by qsync client. Let’s see if qnap can track down the problem.
Haven’t lost any file though, and it’s great having it keep things in sync all in the background. I had a remote editor make a mistake on an edit, and I opened the project at the office, fixed it, and the new sequence was returned to the remote editors without any intervention from me.

You might want to look at Hedge’s Postlab plus Drive. This lets you collaborate as a team, and media is sync’ed via Drive sort of like Dropbox’s SmartSync. Best with proxy media. I reviewed it here:

The write-up is FCPX-centric, however, it works with Premiere as well.
