EDITING 24P CANON 5D FOOTAGE WITH 50i JVC HM 100 FOOTAGE
Hello members,
I’ve been reading these forums for a while now and have always found them very helpful.
I’m struggling to find the answer to my curent dilemma though so decided to post for the first time.I’ve been shooting on the JVC HM100 (1980×1080 50i) for a while now and find the work flow into FCP very easy. But I’ve just stating shooting video with a Canon 5d Mark 11 (1980×1080 24p) and am having problems editing shots from the two cameras together.
In hindsight I wish I’d not gone for the ‘film look’ on the 5D and had set it to 25p as this might have avoided a few of the problems I’m facing now. Hindsight really is a wonderful thing!
But for now I’m stuck with the problem of needing to edit the footage from the two camera together.
Does anyone have any advice on…
– How I should set up FCP?
– How I should convert the 5D footage using Mpeg streamclip before I start to edit.
I need this to be broadcast quality and at the moment it is far from that. Any help would be much appreciated.

You can use both frame rates in the same timeline, FCP has an open Format Timeline for the last few versions.
You will notice the difference between cameras, but you can use some of the 50i footage to conform to
slowmotion when needed. 25/24p is going to look alot smoother in realtime, VS the video look of the 50iIf you dont already have the Canon E-1 Plugin makes sure to download it.
https://www.usa.canon.com/dlc/controller?act=GetArticleAct&articleID=3249Then you can transcode it in FCP via Log and Transfer window, I know the HM100U is the easiest to work with. Right off the card, with the Canon DSLR’s you will need to change these files from H.264 to Apple ProRes. Apple ProRes LT seems to be the favorite for the data rate and file size. Still looks pretty crisp, but you will be blowing up your files by 50%.
In short, you can work with both the 50i and 24p footage in the same native if you have at least FCP6
