  • Edit to Tape SNAFU with Kona 3 and 1080i

Posted by Liane G rozzell on July 13, 2007 at 1:27 am

I’m trying to do an insert edit to a master on an HDCam VTR. The sequence is set to the AJA Kona 3 1080i29.97 preset, with the compressor set to DVCPRO HD 1080i60. This is the exact same setting as the sequence was when I originally made the master tape, many moons ago, but with FCP 5.

When I try to Edit to Tape, it says the sequence settings are not the same as the output settings. I try to set my playback (output) settings to match, but there isn’t anything that quite matches in the list! The closest I see is AJA Kona 3 1080i29.97 10-bit, 8-bit or RGBA. Nothing that matches the DVCPro HD compression setting. What am I missing?

I updated FCP to 6.0.1 and installed the latest Kona 3 driver 4.x, and it still won’t work. I didn’t think to trash prefs — will try that in the morning. Any other thoughts?

    Peace,
    Liane

Are you using the Easy Setup for DVCPRO HD 1080i/60? or are you manually selecting things. You should not have to be looking for things “that match” in the list…the Easy Setup takes care of everything.

Load the Easy Setup and you should have no problem.

Still having problems….then trash your prefs.

Still having problems…then use the Kona UNINSTALLER. Then reload your driver.

Choose Easy Setup > AJA Kona 3 1080i/29.97 DVCPro HD.

Do NOT try to set everything yourself. Use the Easy Setup.

I am now officially at my wits’ end! I tried the Easy Setup as you all suggested. I also trashed prefs and reinstalled the Kona driver, which BTW never gave me a clean restart, only the jet-engine takeoff failed restart.

The error message I get when I try to preview my Edit to Tape is this:
“Incompatible compression settings. You may have attempted to output a clip with compression settings that do not match the current output settings. Try nesting the clip in a sequence with the correct settings.”

So I set the Easy Setup, make a NEW sequence (which should be correct compression settings to go with everything else, right?!), paste the clip into the new sequence, go to Edit to Tape, and get the same error message above!

I’m about to repair permissions, shut down everything for 10 minutes and other brushing and flossing. What else could be wrong?

    Peace,
    Liane

Then that’s telling me your clip does not match the Sequence. That’s the only way to get that error.

Then something went wrong with the install or you have a conflict somewhere. Have you installed any other video drivers? Did you run the AJA Conflict Catcher?

The clip and the sequence have the same settings. Anyway, I tried nesting the clip in a new sequence (with the Easy Setup settings). Still no good. The clip doesn’t seem to require rendering, either.

Ran the AJA conflict catcher — there are no other video drivers. Tried again to uninstall and reinstall the AJA drivers. The uninstaller crashed and disappeared, but re-installation seemed to complete except for the bad restart.

Thanks for hanging in with me on this. I’m going to try under a different user.

Drag your sequence FROM THE BROWSER to the Edit to tape window and you should be golden.

Holy Cow! I tried that before seeing Jeremy’s post, and dragging works when the buttons only give error messages. Amazing. (I’m not usually a drag & drop person.)

Finally got a higher level Apple tech support person to help, and it also turned out that I needed to export my Motion projects as QTs and replace them in the timeline.

My last issue, which I’m taking up with AJA, is the fact that the bit I output has a small horizontal line runnning across the screen.

    Thanks for the help, y’all.

    Peace,
    Liane

That small horizontal line might be a bad reference signal to the HDCAM deck, fwiw…
