Edit to tape FCP 3 Kona 3 HDW1800
Posted by David J. stewart on September 3, 2009 at 11:51 pmTrying to do an edit to tape, tape is blacked.
When I type the in point time code of 09590000 and hit enter the window
resets to 07:59:40;24.Any idea why this is happening?

September 4, 2009 at 1:51 amCant’ speak for that deck specifically, though I had the exact same problem with an SRW-5500 the other week. I had the format converter set to a 59.94 frame rate and the deck control was slaving to that, even though the base system rate was 28.98

September 4, 2009 at 4:03 amWe use that deck on a daily basis with FCP and a Kona3 (as well as others, DS etc).
normally when you type in a number, while you are connected to the deck over 422, and the deck is in remote the number you type in may be modified slightly, as in type in 59:00:00 and if the tape is striped drop frame it will respond to the number with 59;00;02 which is the correct response. Is it possible that the tape is striped incorrectly and the communication with FCP and the deck is causing the number to change based on the code on the tape.
if you hit play on the tape what TC is it reporting?
you may have to roll into the tape a bit for the TC to be read. also make sure the TCR is set to auto so it’s reading both LTC and VITC
If the tape is correctly striped, you can control it, and it is reading the correct code in both shuttle and Jog you may need to trash your prefs.
use pref manager for FCP available here

September 4, 2009 at 6:44 pmTCR is now on Auto, thx Doug,
OK home stretch here edit to tape/deck is running great
BUT no picture or sound on deck only bars.I am printing 720 24p to 1080 60i with the Kona 3
here are my settings, can you tell me where to check to make sure the deck is getting the
1080 60i signal via the SDI out 2B cable that is connected to the deck.David Stewart

set the 1800 ref to Input video, cause you are running freerun from the Kona. or feed the Kona the same ref that the 1800 is getting
Make sure the deck is in 1080i 59.94 mode in system settings
eject your tape, menu item 13 turn on> set
check that sys is 59.94. if you change it you’ll need to shut down then power back on for the deck to reboot to 59.94.
make sure you are not in edit to tape and verify the presence of SDI input on the deck.
with the tape still ejected the deck should be in e to e and by pressing the display button on the 1800 you should see signal passing. If the deck is not in e to e press the record button to force e to e
If this is OK and the deck does not print or edit to tape you may have been in another mode on the deck when you striped. the stripe needs to match the format being recorded.
I assume from your settings that you are monitoring the 1080i signal via component on your monitor, and that you have signal there.Doug Beal

September 6, 2009 at 11:20 pmThx Doug,
I am running free run from the Kona.
Deck was and is set to 59.94.
I am seeing signal passing while tape ejected. (display screen on deck)
I am monitoring on the BT-LH2600W, picture is great, good upres Kona!I’m hearing the sound on the deck when I do edit to tape but the picture is just Bars… Hmmm.
Thx for your patience Doug, is there anything that obviously needs checking if I am only getting bars on the deck?

September 8, 2009 at 2:34 amwhat is the deck referencing for sync. It needs to be input video if you keep the Kona on freerun. sounds like its behaving like a dead patch, usually cause it can’t ref internal against the incoming signal

September 8, 2009 at 4:34 pmNo external sync generator just running off of the Kona.
Frustrating, this worked last year same vers of final cut and Leopard, nothing has been upgraded.
Curious why I see the signal when the tape is ejected but not during edit to tape.
Curious that the sound is being recorded during edit to tape.
Where do I find “ref for sync” on the deck?Dave

September 9, 2009 at 11:51 amThe obvious is never seen.
David I would consider purchasing an AJA Gen10 sync generator.
this will provide you with Black burst for standard def and HD tri level sync, as well as an AES ref for any audio stations you might be using.
Use black for 29.97 and or 59.94 and setup the Trilevel for 23.98 for HD work that involves that rate. If you have a patchbay you can normal the black to ref ins on your machines and patch 1080Psf23.98 to ref in when required. The cost of a gen10 is under $400 US.
If you master anything in 23.98 and want to do a downconvert in sync to a dbeta you’ll need 23.98 to the 1800 and black to the option2 ref input of the 1800 to get it all lined up.
operating in freerun on the Kona can work as long as all other machines you output to can lock to input video but it’s not a recommended way to fly. too many gotchas can and will evolve.
