Edit Nikon DSLR videos in AE (or Premiere)
I have a Nikon DSLR D7000 that can capture 1080 24p videos as .mov files.
I’m looking for the best way to edit these files in AE and Premiere.
I googled for it and found that I should convert the video before importing it.
So I’m a bit confused about this. There are two possibilities:
1) My .mov file is not compressed. So why should I convert it?
2) My .mov file is already compressed. So why should I convert it again? Do I lose in quality?
By the way my final question is:
What software and what encoder should I use on my videos before opening them in AE / Premiere?

For d7000 only… Rename extensions to mp4.
Can be done with bridge.No need to transcode. It in PP

Why should I do it in Bridge and not simply renaming the file from the explorer?
And why does it work for the D7000? Are there any differences in encoding between D7000 and, for example, D800?

I’ve tried but I don’t see any performance improvement after renaming to .mp4…
Do you have any suggestions?

You can import & edit Nikon MOV in Adobe Premiere Pro smoothly. Nikon DSLR uses the sophisticated H.264 compression method for recording video files to the camera’s memory card. This is an ideal file type for video capture in an SLR camera, but not ideal for editing. The H.264 compression format should be transcoded into a format better suited to editing; this would usually be MPEG-2, which ensures maximum editing quality and efficiency when working with Premiere Pro CS4/CS5/CS6. So, the best method is to convert Nikon MOV to MPEG-2 before loading to Premiere Pro.

At the end I decided to convert my MOV files to DNxHD before editing them in PP and AE.
It works very well.
