  • Easiest way to fill in this scanned name?

Posted by Matt Stoltz on September 25, 2009 at 5:00 am

Hey all -I was just wondering if anyone could give me some easy tips on how to fill in the edges on this name that I scanned (link below)-I have illustrator too but I am really really remedial with illustrator

I just want to fill in the black to make the name more smooth around the edges –
Hoping not to trace the whole thing cause i have 16 names to do

    thanks

I have included an example. Is this what you are looking after?

    Go to the channel tab
Select the button LOAD AS SELECTION
    Go to the layer tab
Inverse the selection (Ctrl Shift I)
    In the menu bar: SELECT-MODIFY-EXPAND
Give a number of pixels (I did 10)
Fill the selection with black (Alt + backspace)
    Deselect (Ctrl D)

I hope this is usefull for you. You can even make an ACTION to have all the files changed at once.

Probably just about any method you use (that’s simple and fast) is going to increase the thickness of the letters. Theo has done a nice job and I’ve given it a try (example below) myself. The only real success I’ve had results in thicker letters 🙁

    Hey Matt,
My workflow works really well when taking a signature like that to different formats. What I do is actually take the image into Illustrator rather than Photoshop because Illustrator is vector based and allows you to take that final production and scale it up/down with out any quality loss.

Once I bring in the image I select the Pen tool and trace around the signature (also using besier curves), these creates the image as vector and it saves you time because you only traced it once but you can make it any size you want.

    Thanks

    Hey Wade

Yeah I agree -I would totally do that if i had the time -I have about 20 of these names to do and dont really have the time to trace them all -that would def be my choice as well UNLESS
you have a quick way to trace it in ILL -I have cs4

    thanks
