  Easier tracing option?

  I’m doing a LOT of tracing of raster files on illustrator.
  After using the image trace function to vectorize a raster file, I further edit the vector. I select the vector file, place the raster file I will trace from on top, and begin to erase sections of the vector that don’t line up with the raster file. The problem I’m encountering is that I have to hide the raster layer (the one I’m tracing from) each time I want to add (paint) to the vector. Is there a way I can paint on the vector without hiding (or effecting) the topmost raster layer?
