Dynamic trim with sound monitor
Posted by Matthew Skeris on January 17, 2008 at 2:26 pmHello all, my question is about the latest FCP software:
can I perform a “ripple trim” or “J-K-L trim” and hear the audio play down as it is being extended so that if I stop the playhead on the fly at the correct moment, I will be finished with the trim, except for a review.
Thank you!
P.S. same question, really: is there any way to hear sound trims dynamically while using Slip or Slide trim tools?

January 17, 2008 at 11:30 pmYou would need to open the Trim Edit window (Command-7) in order to hear the audio when doing a ripple edit. Make sure you have enabled ‘Dynamic Trimming’ (checkbox near the bottom of the Trim Edit window) and also ‘Audio Scrubbing’ (Shift-S).
It’s not possible to hear audio when doing slip or slide trimming because those types of trim can’t be adjusted in the Trim Edit Window.

January 18, 2008 at 10:21 amThanks for replying, Martin. Just to clarify, do I need to be in FCP’s Trim window mode (Command-7) in order to have use of the J-K-L keys for dynamic trimming with sound?
On another front, are there any limitations to Trim mode I should be aware of? For instance, on a different NLE, when I work with multiple cam interviews (shot w / 2 track mono sound), I sometimes lift out the off-mic sound completely from either A1 or A2, leaving nothing (aka Filler)on the timeline. I read some posts* in the archive here that seem to indicate that Filler was not ripple-able in conjunction with other clips during trim- is that correct?

p.s. thanks for your website, too.

I’m used to Slipping and Sliding muliple clips with the mouse, but it seems from the posts I’ve read that these kinds of trims can only be done with keypad entries. Is that true? I hope there’s another way, one with as-you-trim audio monioring.

January 19, 2008 at 10:39 pmYes, JKL dynamic trim only works in the Trim Edit Window.
It’s not possible to do a ripple trim on a gap across all tracks in the TEW but if you fill the gap with Slug (right-click on the gap) then it will work as expected. Personally I’ve never wanted to ripple trim a gap in the TEW, I would just move the clips in the Timeline.
Regarding slipping/sliding, just a correction on what I said before. You can actually slip a single clip in the TEW with the mouse if you like (check the manual for the how to) but you have to locate the frame, then snap the in or out of the clip to that frame. Dynamic trimming in slip mode, slipping multiple clips or sliding clips is not possible in the TEW.

January 19, 2008 at 11:53 pmThanks again, Martin.
I was wondering if it is possible to set FCP’s playhead Pre-Roll (not sure what it’s called in FCP)to a very very low setting, say 1 or 2 frames. The idea being that a 1-frame ripple quickly followed by a this super-short Pre-Roll might emulate what I’m after- a kind of dynamic trim with audio feedback. I don’t have FCP yet, so I can’t try it.

January 20, 2008 at 11:02 amInteresting idea but it’s not very workable in practice. If you’re coming from an Avid background then in most cases there is usually an alternative and faster method of achieving something rather than trying to duplicate the Avid function.

January 20, 2008 at 2:01 pmHi again- yeah, that’s me alright, old dog soon to learn new tricks. I am looking forward to being in Mac land again.
I’m sorry to hear my mini Pre-Roll concept doesn’t quite work- what was the shortest Pre-roll and Post-roll allowed?

January 20, 2008 at 2:12 pmMinimum is one frame. But you’d have to constantly change the figures depending on what type of trim you’re doing. Also the Play Around Current command is one of the most useful features in FCP when used with a preroll or postroll of a couple of seconds.

January 20, 2008 at 2:39 pmI’m going to play around with this next time I get my hands on an FCP. I hope that a 3rd-party floating macro palette is possible- one that could not only nudge the Ripple or Slip, but also place the cursor just where it needs to be in order to play the sound of the resulting 1 frame change.
As far as the normal operation of Play Around Current- I agree it’s vital. I also hope that the macro palette can include a button to access the FCP setting & quickly re-instate the proper Pre-roll amounts. Might work might not, but I just have to ask if anyone out there is into exploring this possibility.
Cheers,
Matthew
