  • Dynamic spline on top of dynamic spline? Corrugated electric cable

    Hi,
I’m trying to animate different electric cables with dynamic splines. The problem is when I try to animate kind of corrugated cable with a smaller cable inside: I want to keep it simple, no colliders, no hollow cables, I just want to put the smaller cable on the tip of the main cable; the main cable is made of a cloner object with 2 cylinders with different diameters, the smaller cable is just a Sweep NURBS.

I tried to set the first spline with a constraint null at the bottom, a second null with a “Aligne to spline” tag to fix it at the top, and the second spline with its bottom constrained to this second null. The splines are bezier at the bottom and linear at the top.

But… the bottom of the second spline is fixed loosely, also with the offset set to 0% and the influence to 100%, and the dynamics of the second spline are behaving indipendently from the “global” dynamics (when the first spline bends down also the second spline bends in the very same way, so its bottom is not aligned to the top of the first one and its tip is falling down where you’d expect it to be “dragged” down aiming upwards).

I tried also to put the second cable “inside” the first, constrained at the same bottom null, just a bit longer, but the dynamics are different and the inner cable goes out of the outer cable.

    Any idea? Thanks in advance

I am not sure I understood correct but it sounds to me that using Sweep nurbs for both cables, and instancing the spline should solve this. … again I am not sure I understood correctly.

Thanks for reply, not sure if I understand YOU correctly, but the main problem is about dynamics: there is longer spline with a shorter spline on top, but:
    1. the bottom of the shorter one (the constraint point) is a bit offset from the tip of the longer one
    2. the shorter one is not tangential to the longer one
    3. the dynamics of the shorter one are a carbon copy of the longer one (the bottom of the shorter stays about (see 1.) in the same position of the tip of the longer but it’s not really “dragged” around dynamically)

I would think this setup is not possible but if I put an Hair object on the tip of the spline, the hair and the guides behave perfecly
