Dynamic RAM Preview – AMD 69xx GPU rendering freezes
Posted by Myron Hobizal on February 27, 2013 at 3:20 pmHas anyone heard any update on this issue from Sony? I just submitted a tech support incident with them. I recently built a new computer dedicated for video editing and still getting freezes during GPU assisted rendering. All drivers updated, and this is a clean install of Win8 Pro, with no other apps loaded, besides Vegas and DVD Architect. I tried setting Dynamic RAM Preview to 0, but occasionally Vegas still freezes. I have to disable GPU acceleration completely to fix it.
Specs:
Windows 8 Pro 64-bit
Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 MB
AMD FX-8350 black edition 4.0GHz CPU

February 27, 2013 at 3:59 pmSorry to have to tell you this, but the AMD processor is really a poor choice for a video editing workstation. Have you tried disabling GPU renders, and just letting the CPU do it? Most people that have render issues usually seem to have them disappear when they DO NOT choose the GPU render option. You also have a lower-level video card, so you’re not going to obtain any benefit by having GPU render enabled.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad hardware news, but I wanted to help and answer your question.

February 27, 2013 at 4:43 pmI’ve been told that setting the Dynamic Preview Ram to 0 helps.
I have freezes with mine but much less since I’ve set the ram to 0.Roger Bansemer – PaintingAndTravel.com

February 28, 2013 at 2:47 amHmm. Not sure where you are getting your CPU and GPU performance charts. This combination would render just fine and fast, if Sony would get their act together to support OpenCL correctly. The GPU renders1080p with several effects, faster then real-time. Plus I have another x16 slot to add another card. Unfortunately Sony is behind the times with SLI mode too and doesnt support it, as far as I know.

February 28, 2013 at 2:01 pmI get all my charts from detailed tests on the Tom’s Hardware website. I’m not just pulling garbage out of the air when I post hardware ‘stuff’. The tests that I quote from are probably the most detailed hardware tests/comparisons that you’re going to find anywhere.
Don’t blame it on Sony if the AMD architecture is not optimized for specific types of video creation/editing. AMD has their way of doing things, Intel has their way. It just so happens that Intel’s way is significantly better.

March 1, 2013 at 2:28 pmI am well aware of all the Intel posts over at Tom’s Hardware. I know there are CPU design differences between Intel/AMD, but that doesn’t excuse the bugs in the Sony software, on the AMD side.

March 1, 2013 at 4:56 pmIf you know the problems, it would be very wise on your part to avoid AMD. That’s what I did, and the issue is behind me.

March 7, 2013 at 3:30 amOne difference. You have Nvidia graphics card. I have AMD (OpenCL) graphics card which is not working in Vegas. I have contacted Sony Support and they are currently reviewing logs to get a fix. Multiple people with AMD graphics are having issues, not just me. They are looking into it now and when I find out more, Ill post here.

July 17, 2013 at 7:55 pmI had the same problem with my Radeon HD 6850 when rendering in Main-Concept .mp4. The renders either got to 1% or 99% and then froze. After many weeks of on and off troubleshooting, I finally found a solution to my problems. I knew it was a problem with the GPU accelerated renders, so I focused my troubleshooting on that aspect. It turns out that if you are on windows 8 (or I believe 7) you can completely uninstall your Graphics card drivers (if on windows 8 DO NOT use AMD’s driver uninstall cleaner utility as it will bug windows to the point where you have to do a system refresh.) , reboot and then go to AMD’s website and install Catalyst Control Center 12.8 and it’s drivers. Then reboot once more and you should have no more render freezes! This worked for me and I can t guarantee that it will work for you, but hey! it’s worth a try right??
Hope this helped!!
