    HI CCW (collective cow wisdom)
I’m a looong time lurker over these foruns, but now I need some help here – if possible and appropriate.
After extensive research over the internet I couldn’t find ANY similar problem, so this post – and another one at Avid’s forum – is my last chance. Therefore all input is appreciated.

I’m trying to digitize some 24p footage shot with the (old, I know) DVX100A and there are major problems with it. I understand the process of laying the 24p frames over 60i onto tape, and have tried everything I could think of ( film settings / capture settings / deck prefs / audio omf/mxf / media creation omf/mxf ) but my capture (to internal SATA) gets “glitchy” despite the supposedly successful digitize attempt .

As I monitor the faulty digitize directly from the deck (Sony M15) both image and sound are perfect!
All appropriate settings seem right and even if the system succeeds my batch capture attempt
the result is a sort of a “glitch” that appears to be random, sometimes is video only,
sometimes are audio only and -on a third variation- both locked together.
These artifacts always last for a frame only, I must add.

Footage was shot in advanced mode and I’m logging the clips accordingly at 00 frames.
The clips I attempt to digitize are just a couple of minutes long only, but check this out:
if I change their duration to a few seconds I get them “right” but this is not a possible workaround unfortunately as I have too many tapes to digitize – Oh yeah, like you didn’t know that already ;>)

As I review these affected clips, I notice also that even though 24 unique frames are captured every now and then I get a sort of a “jump cut” also. Is this right? Because if I digitize them with the Standard PD I dont get these jumps over the filmed live action but I get duplicated frames that I assume is caused by the
wrong PD setting into 24p/Film Settings. But besides these “jumps” I’m getting “glitches” so this is a show-stopper!

I repeat: During the digitize process NO artifacts are displayed over the broadcast monitor.
The system is a good working horse running MAC OS 10.4.11 along with QT 7.3
    (G5 DP2.7 Nvidia 256MB 3.5 RAM)
Project is 23.976 and set to digitize to second internal SATA drive.
AVID software only version is 2.8

Has anyone ran into something remotely similar?

Very strange – are you captuting FireWire via Avid hardware (like a Mojo) or directly connected to the camera/deck with FireWire?
Also go to Film/24p settings and make sure you are set up for ADVANCED as well as make active the timecode to pulldown (00:00:00:00) relationship as “A”. If still stuttery – try B, C, and D.

Also try benchmarking the hard drive speed to see if there’s anything unusual. Try defragmenting, or even better, reformat the drive. Try a different Firewire port. Try benchmarking a firewire drive using the same port to see if there’s a bottleneck in the firewire. Just some suggestions.

I should clarify that this was an attempt to digitize over firewire directly from the sony deck.
And so the Film/24p configuration was set to get the A frames from 00 TC.

One thing I should mention is back on the Avid’s forum someone reminded me that
if motion is NOT having jittery on a broadcast monitor that means it was shot in standard pulldown.
Well, I am going to consider it and re-make some more tests since I didn’t shoot it myself
and, the director-friend who brought this in, might have been misguided on this matter.
Motion looks too smooth to be Adv. PD, so I’ll give Std. PD a try, it won’t hurt.

One more thing to consider though is that I am pretty shure the tests I have made with normal PD (or standard) rendered a digitized 23.976 clip that does NOT have 24 unique frames ( some of them were duplicated ) and I am uncertain if this is O.K. Can someone confirm this?

Because of this duplicated frames issue, I didn’t try to digitize longer clips to try Std PD out yet.

The artifacts I am reporting are not what is considered jittery, but likely a “digital drop-out”.
This is strange behaviour indeed. I’ll see if an update to 2.8.4 helps with this,
but I’m inclined to try the original camera to test from there.

Until then I am looking forward to get any input if someone can think of something else.
I appreciate all the efforts and all the suggestions you have made to help me with this.
Keep them coming, I still need them.

Try NORMAL pulldown, that is a common error when shooting. When I use the DVX100, I set all my settings to be ADVANCED or NORMAL so there is no issue when hitting the setting wheel by mistake. My settings will differe in color matrix, black level, and other things, but they will always be of the same frame rate and cadence type.

Michael, I am aware of your immensely helpful webpage…24p.com
But would you be kind to enlighten me on two dead-ends I have ran into:

    – it is possible to retrieve USABLE audio from a PD removal digitize?

    – Is it possible to retrieve 24 unique frames from a PD removal digitize?

These questions regards attempts on an AVID Media Composer with NO AVID hardware,
in a 23.976 NTSC SD project with firewire capture from the DVX100A
