    I went to the expo today a bit before the doors opened… there was a big rush from the doors to the Panny booth (which was about 10 feet past the doors.. so the line literally whent out the door!). IMHO the best place to see the HDX camera was the Sammy’s Camera booth – they had the camera with component to a HD CTR monitor… and no people in line! It does seem like panny has a winner… BUT am I the only only one who is not totally in love? I see noise all over the shadow areas, especially at the panny booth with the camera hooked up to a 17inch LCD. I wish they would have hooked it up to a 42incher!

    One of the coolest things I saw at the expo related to the panny was the CitiDISK HD. For $1200 you get a 120 gig (approx 120 minutes of footage) firrewire disk recorder… waaay cheaper than the panny one, even waaaaaaayyyyy more cheaper than P2… BUT the scary thing is that the CitiDISK guy said that this was the 1st time they were actually hooked up to the HDX. That sorta scared me, he quickly followed up to say he had just been to panny HQ in japan. I asked the panny guy and he said today was the 1st time he had ever heard of them… interesting. Back to the CitiDISK, it has a 90 minute (odd for a 120 minute recorder) internal battery and a 3 hour external one… they also offer a anton bauer pass through housing (seems like a big brick for the HDX handheld), and a tripodmount pass through – nice.

    The thing that reall knocked my socks off (other than the static shocks I got when I touched anything – hope nothing got fried) was the Canon with the HD-SDI 24F output. Now I’ll fess up, I have never liked the Canon’s – the way they look, they way people go on and on and on about the interchangable lenses even though 95% will never use that feature… the way the feel.. just never liked them, and was not really even excited to see the HDV version, but WOW…. that is a nice camera. If you are doing something in-studio, or can rig up a Kona / Decklink capture station on wheels… WOW. There were a bunch of peopel trying to get the good on the 24F…. no luck, but as the rep said “the proof is is in the picture”. They had a sony HD CTR for the demo playing off a DVCPro 1200 deck. The demo also had 1080i HDV and that looked pretty good too – although the shots were very locked down & still… not much motion, but the SDI stuff was bike spokes, driving… all good! I still dont like the way it feels in hand… but for what it is best at you would be tethered to a computer anyway.

    But clearly the best booth of all was Bessie’s!

    I tend to agree with You on Canon.

    Hi Harry,

    We did have footage playing back on a 42″ plasma, sorry you didn’t see that. There were 25 cameras shipped here last week and they were all version 4 but not all were tweaked on, so some may have been noisier. But the camera that will deliver will be like the ones that shot the footage. Did you see the Karate footage? Nice slo-mo with a single source lighting and smoke? There was no noise in that picture. Did you see the footage in the Moviola footage. Very nice stuff, many scenes with low light and darkness, no noise. Hopefully you will take the time to look at the footage for a representation of what the camera can do.

    Take a look at the Basketball footage, or the opening of Memoirs of a Geisha, or the green screen stuff of the music video, all look pretty terrific. Lots of moving footage, not many lock downs. All of this was edited onFCP in the native codec and put bacck out to tape.

    Jan,
    We would love to see the other footage.
    I saw all the footage from DVX User, those
    guys did a great job and I value there
    opinions since they are DP’s and filmakers.
    Will Panasonic have a site to download
    WMV-HD of these other clips. Put an HVX-200
    bug in the lower left and a Panasonic HD Logo
    in the lower right. SOny has some HDV clips
    encoded as WMV-HD. After Sony seems the HVX footage
    they might take their HDV clips off-line!!

    Great idea Mike. Probably do it off of an external server. I know that DVXUser server have served 100,000 downloads and now it is being mirrored to other sites just to handle the capacity. So maybe the Tosh site can do it. 😉 Give me a week or so, as I do want a little more edit time. These clips were the crash course and there is so much other footage to work with.

    I think I will leave the music video with the green screen so that people can pop in their own backgrounds. That could be kind of fun.;-)

    Also am having Nacy Schreiber do a DP’s kind of a test, so you know where and what the camera does. She has finished some of this but I am not sure how well it flies without a voice over, or at least a notpad, so again I just need a little more time. I am beginning to think I will be a FCP editor before this is all over. And here I thought I was a product manager. Hmmm.

    Do you have an edit system to view Native footage??
    The WMV -HD is fine for me. That is a delivery format.
    Look on the Microsoft WMV site. You have stuff shot
    on IMAX to DVX on there. Download those and compare
    the last HVX video that Barry uploaded. The HVX footage
    holds its own and in many cases I think it is much better
    quality than is put put by the biggest studios.
    That is all you can ask for.

    thanks for the continous flow of information. these forums rely upon your good efforts.

    as to u being a fcp person,

    well… i used to be a writer/producer

    but due to the changes in the production world,

    i now shoot most of my own footage (just sold my dvx100a and will hopefully be buying a hvx200 from B&h)

    and am in the process of gearing up to put together a fcp rig of my own.

    in this economy we are all one person bands!
