DVD video comes out with zigzags on sharp edges – not smooth strate lines ASAP
If some one could help me that would be great as we have a project to send out ASAP.
Problem we are having is when we play the DVD on TV the horizontal and vertical lines (strait edges) come out in zig zags or steps. This only happens in areas where the lines are sharp.
We created a series of jpgs 720/576 using Maya (animation software). Exported an AVI uncompressed and progressive in PAL format.
Sent through to Encore and this is were we seem to have the problem. When we burn the DVD and play it on a TV.. we have this problem. When watching the AVI on the computer the video is perfect. When watching the DVD version from Encore.. it comes up with this problem.
We have tried saving the AVI in Interlaced but this did not help.
I have also tried TMPBEnc-2 but there is so many settings to try that I don -

This is a limitation of interlaced displays over progressive (IE, computer) displays.
There is nothing at all you can do about this apart from be aware of it, learn what you can & cannot get away with, and work within the restrictions.Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings here…..

Let’s assume you’ve used anti-aliasing in Maya and your output is appropriately smooth-edged.
Progressive scan is not a good choice for creating graphics for use in (interlaced) PAL or NTSC video.
If you create a series of JPEGs first, maybe you should consider creating at 50 images per second for PAL – one per field – though you may do better to render direct to uncompressed AVI from MAYA. As you report it, there seems no reason for the extra JPEG step.
For uncompressed PAL you should choose interlaced – upper field first if you want the video to play smooth and normal on a standard display. Then you compression step should allow for upper field first coming in, and upper field first coming out for the MPEG2 file.
