  • DVD video bit rate – Movie Studio vs. Architect Studio?

I am using Movie Studio Platinum 9.0b trial and DVD Architect Studio 4.5 trial in anticipation of buying if I have a good experience with the trial. One problem I have run into:

My source video is 1920x1080i AVCHD from a Sony camcorder. I normally will generate AVCHD video output, but occasionally will want to create a standard DVD for family who do not have a hi-def TV.

I know I can render a DVD mpeg-2 file in VMS and then burn that file to a DVD-recordable in Architect. But when VMS renders DVD mpeg-2, the video bit rate in the rendered file is lower than I would like. I would like to keep it close to 8 mbs, knowing it will vary some depending on the scene. But VMS generates a file with 5-6.5 mbs. And there seems to be no way to set the desired bit rate in VMS. The bit rate can be set in Architect, but it does no good to set it at 8.0 mbs when it is going to burn a file generated by VMS at a lower bit rate.

Is there a way to end up with a DVD that plays at or close to the typical max variable bit rate of 8.0 mbs?

If you can set the bit-rate in DVD Architect Studio, then feed it the AVCHD file so that it will be encoding from the high def source. This should give you the bit-rate you want at the highest quality possible for that bit-rate.

Thanks for responding. The AVCHD files have a file extension of .m2ts. In Architect, those files don’t appear in the Explorer tab so I don’t know how to get them into Architect.

*.mpg files do appear, so I changed the extension of one of the AVCHD files to .mpg (since I think it is a type of mpeg file??). The file then showed up in Architect’s Explorer panel, but when I tried to open it I got an error that said it is not a supported file type.

I’ll experiment with having Movie Studio render some other file types that might have a higher bit rate (AVI perhaps?) and then see if Architect will process them.

    Followup:

I found that the AVI for Windows route works to keep the bit rate high, but within DVD limits. The AVI file has a high bit rate (higher than DVD.

MVS: render AVCHD clips to an AVI for Windows file (lower field first).
Then add that file into DVDA Studio and set the bit rate default slider to 8.00

It sounds like you found a workflow that works for you. Great.
