  • DVD Ripper that rips to an Avid acceptable file

    Hey Guys,

This isn’t a Avid question per se, but I’m not sure where else to post it. I recently got a Mac (switched from PC) and a co-worker of mine wants me to do his on air demo reel for him and gave me DVDs with his work. On my old PC Avid before it died I was able to bring it in through the mojo, with the Mac I’m not so sure. I’ve been trying different DVD rippers such as handbrake and wondershare, but they all seem to give me a quality of video that is far worse than the DVD- where as the DVD is a little blurry, the rip will be blurry AND have what looks like interlaced scan lines running through.

So my question is, have any of you come across a DVD ripper (doesn’t need to be free) that rips the same quality as the source(preferably in a file Avid accepts)? If not, what’s the best way on a Mac to get the video in at the right quality? Work arounds work for me too, just so long as it’s not going to cost me a grand, I’m open to anything.

    I appreciate any feedback.

    John

MPEG Streamclip has always worked well, as has DVDxDV.

Avid prefers an Avid MXF file for best performance, however, both of the above applications will rip into a .mov, which Avid 5.0+ can read via AMA. In lieu of using AMA, you can rip the files with a DNxHD Codec (.mov), and perform a straight import into Media Composer.

Why won’t the Mojo work on the Mac? It just connects via FW.

But aside from that, I use MPEG StreamClip and create a .mov with the Avid DV Codec, then import that into Avid. Works very well.

Thank you guys for the posts. After trying a bunch of them, all of which seemed to give me the scan line look I was trying to avoid, I went with DVDxDV- mostly because it was the only one I saw that allowed you to mark an in and out on a specific clip you want, which saved me time and space. It says when I burn it to a DVD the lines won’t be there, but I’ll believe it when I see it.

    Thanks again!

You can do that with MPEG StreamClip as well.
