DVD Newbie… What am i doing wrong…

I’m fairly in experienced making DVD’s so would appreciate any advice in simple terms!!
I’ve shot a 15min film on EX1 1280 / 720 50p.
Edited with FCP using the same EX1 codec.
Used Media Manager to export my edit to ProRes 422.
Graded and VFX these clips in AE, exported using the same ProRes 422.
Re-connected in FCP to a ProRes SEQ.
Mix audio in STP.
Final export from FCP in ProRes 422.
Into Encore, built a simple menu in PS and then Encode using default settings….And it looks like crap 🙁 and does not work (i.e. nothing or crash), on some players, or computers.
I get the feeling its an Encoding issue as the final master from FCP is gorgeous, and I know very little about DVD encoding.
I’m sure its not just that the master is HD and the DVD is SD as I’ve see much better looking DVD’s…
Could somebody recommend me better settings (or method), to squeeze get the best quality possible out of encore without crashing low speck players.

Have you tried encoding to MPEG-2 for DVD in Compressor?

It’s recommended if you’re trying to down-sample HD video to SD and are working in FCP.
I haven’t used Compressor in a while, but last I recall they did offer encoding presets. Look for a standard definition DVD preset.

Yeah its pretty well known that Adobe Products (which use Main Concept mpeg Encoder) do an absolute horrible job at downscaling HD to SD. You will have much better results if you encode it with compressor, or you could even export an SD 720×480 (widescreen) version of the master from FCP, then have encore encode that file… though you will still probably get better results with compressor. Just don’t let Encore do any downscaling… the results are garbage, and have been for many years. Maybe they got stuck in some bad contract with MainConcept?
