  • DVCproHD through Kona LHe Card to HD Deck

Posted by Matt James on July 29, 2006 at 6:15 am

I just finished cutting a multicam show with 8 HDV Camera’s and 2 HDcam cam’s. We digitized everything in DVCproHD because I love the files sizes and think it looks really good.

I send it through HD-SDI from the Kona LHe to my clients Sony HDW-2000 HD deck and it’s looks great! I’m even recording a DVD downstream from the HD deck, using it as my window-burn genreator and the image is fine. The thing is, the deck won’t record the image. It records a nice green digital grid. The audio is there, so I know it’s not a connection issue.

Just wondering if anyone has had this problem or am I expecting too much out of the Kona? If it is upconverting the DVCproHD to true 1920×1080 on the fly with my video playback setting at 1080i 8 bit, isn’t it making the signal 8 bit HD or is it just monitoring the playback at that rate, and what is coming through the HD-SDI is actually a DVCproHD signal still? I’m confused. I even tried making the capture-input setting on the Edit to tape setting window to 1920×1080 DVCproHD and it still didn’t record correctly. All I can find on the AJA website is about DVCproHD acceleration in AND out, but nothing about what the card is actually doing with the signal.

My question is, is this normal and we just need to get a DVCproHD deck or render the whole thing into an unc. 8-bit 1920×1080 sequence, then dump that to tape? Or am I right in thinking that if the deck see’s the converted image from the Kona card, that it should be recording it like normal as well?

    Thanks a lot,

I think something is set incorrectly on your Deck. A DVCPro HD timeline will play out to HD-SDI / HDCAM in realtime for record.

If the cable run to the deck is longer than eight feet, and you are not using a KL-Box, I would suggest you try a very short cable run to the deck. This may not solve it, but it is worth a try, as I’ve had similar problems on the input side when the cable runs were longer than eight feet. Either that or throw a reclocking DA into the line near the deck.

For us, the KL-Box solved the problem

I’m with walter- your deck is not set to downconvert the images to SD.

    Hey Matt,

I just went in and it turns out that the output reference on the deck was incorrectly set. Looks fine now.

I’ll spit out the show on Monday.

    Thanks for your hard work!
