I’m attempting to capture from a Canon XLH1 SDI port through a Blackmagic HD Pro card into FCP 5.

I am using the sequence preset DVCPro HD – 1080i60.

I am using the Capture preset DVCPro HD 1080i60 48kHz.

    My video playback is set for Blackmagic HDTV 1080p 23.976 -> 29.97 output – 10 bit (1920×1080).

I am capturing sound through the internal Mac port.

My huge problem is that the picture doesn’t capture and, although the sound does capture I can onmly hear it on playback, and even then it needds rendering.

I feel that I’m pretty close on this one, but can someone help me get my settings right?

    Harry.

    Hi Harry,

You need to use our easy setups to configure your project. After starting Final Cut Pro, go to Final Cut Pro > Easy Setups in the menu (or use CTRL-Q) and select “Blackmagic HDTV 1080i59.94 – DVCPRO HD”. Make sure you create a new sequence as easy setups don’t affect exisiting ones.

Capturing sound through the internal port of the Mac is not supported and you might get audio sync issues.

If you need to capture audio from the camera together, you’ll need to use a 3rd party SDI audio embedder.

Thank you for the advice. It worked just fine.

My only problem now remains the sound. I have been told that I can capture through the mini jack on the Mac – has anyone else done this?

    Hi Kristian,

    Thanks for your previous advice.

I have now successfully captured with the setting you suggest.

    My problem now is playback.

When I import the file into the timeline it wants to be rendered (about 3 hours for one hour of video). I also can’t see single “paused” frames on my external display, which I usually can of unrendered footage. This leads me to believe that the sequence or playback setting may be wrong.

    Do you have any suggestions?

Here are the settings in the “easy setup” which you suggested that I use:

Sequence Preset: DVCPRO HD – 1080i60
Capture Preset: Blackmagic HDTV 1080i 59.94 DVCPRO HD
Device Control: Blackmagic HDTV 1080i 59.94
    Playback Output Video: Blackmagic HDTV 1080i 29.97 Hz – 8 Bit(1920 x 1080)

Perhaps the playback and sequence settings don’t agree with the Capture preset?

I would be most grateful for you opinion.

    Thank you

    Harry.
