  • DVCPro images on direct capture in FCP? (not recording to tape)

Posted by Trevor Ward on November 9, 2005 at 6:54 pm

shooting on my DVX100a. I’m in a studio and would like to capture directly to FCP. Can I squeeze out a better picture by doing this and not going to tape (miniDV)? Can I plug the camera in, change the capture setting to say DVCPro, use Capture Now and get DVCPro images?

another way to ask this question is: Does the imaging device determine the compression (to DV) or does the compression take place in the recording mechanism?

I don’t have that camera so you’d probably have to ask in the Panasonic forum to get a final answer…BUT…

With most cameras like that you can do what you’re asking by using the S-Video output on the camera. Chances are, it IS pre-compression. You’ll need something on your computer that can capture from S-Video, but if you have a card like that you’re set.

Your video is being converted to anaglog in the camera and then back to digital in the computer to do that, so I guess they’re will be SOME loss in quality, but I’m betting it will be very slight. It’s probably worth it if you’re looking to avoid DV compression for something like, say, green-screen work.

Forgot to mention one more thing…

All of that work is for nothing if you capture as DVCPRO, since it’s using the same compression as DV.

If you want to capture as DVCPRO50 or some kind of Uncompressed format then it might be worth it. But for DVCPRO there’s no reason to go to this much trouble.

Yes, I AM doing green screen work and am trying to avoid the DV artifacts. I don’t know much about the different compressions, that’s why I’m asking. Not getting much response. I should ask the question differntly with different subject.
