DVCPRO HD VFR issue (FCP Studio 2, Panasonic HD1400 VCR and AJA KONA 3
Posted by Thorgnyr on December 3, 2007 at 5:36 pmGood day,
Specs: I’m using a Mac Pro 8 core, 8 gig RAM. KONA 3 card using software version 4.0, Final Cut Studio 2 and a Panasonic HD1400 player for the DVCPRO HD tapes. The end result should be PAL compatible.
The recordings were done using a Varicam and were upcranked to 32 fps. And now comes the problem, I’ve been trying to capture it into final cut and failed every time.. i’ve done some reading about the workflows involved and to no good.
The main theory i’ve been working with is playing the material on 59.94fps and ingesting on 23.98fps. Then using the Frame Rate Converter to conform it to 25 fps.
Am I going about this wrong? Anyone have experience with ingesting this kind of material?

December 3, 2007 at 6:22 pmIf the frame rate is 32fps, then capture @ 59.94 then use the Panasonic frame rate converter to conform to whatever frame rate your timeline is set to. If you are working in PAL, it might be best to go to 23.98, then use CInema Tools to conform to 25, this will result in a an approximate 4% speed up. Are you editing @ 25 or 23.98?
When doing this, make sure that the footage you want to conform is at the root level of your browser (meaning the footage is not in a bin) or to simplify, move that footage to a brand new project and don’t put it in a bin.

first of all you are shooting in the US setting of the camera– WHY?
if you plan on output to 25p you need to set the camera in the 60hrz mode not the 59.94.
FCP/ Kona combo will only extract the frames in the appropriate time base- so a 59.94 will only extract the VFR frames at 23.98 if you are set to 25 it will not work.
the 23.98 > 25 conversion is done in Cinema Tools to the self-contained final output of your 23.98 sequence.
and yes I work in PAL quite a bit. (and that is strange for an american)

I thought all Americans were strange.

I wasn’t the one doing the shooting, I’m the one trying to conform the shots so that the editor can work with it.FCP/ Kona combo will only extract the frames in the appropriate time base- so a 59.94 will only extract the VFR frames at 23.98 if you are set to 25 it will not work
Okay, let me get this straight:
Run the Panasonic HD1400 on 59.94, capture at 23.98 (using 720p 23.98 dvcpro HD capture setting via HDSDI) and then conform in cinema tools?

December 3, 2007 at 7:34 pmNo. Capture @ 59.94 so you are capturing ALL of the frames. Then run the panasonic frame rate converter and conform to 23.98. Then take those clips into Cinema Tools and conform to 25.

December 3, 2007 at 7:40 pmYou mention the Panasonic Frame Converter, is that the DVCPRO HD Converter built into FCS2?
If so, I’ve been through this process already and it seems it’s not timescaling the video correctly. -

December 3, 2007 at 7:43 pmYes, it’s under the Tools menu.

So you have cpatured @ 59.94 and not 23.98 like you said you have been doing? You are capturing @ DVCPRo HD via firewire? Have you moved the clips out of a bin and put them in the root level of your browser?

I tried both.
And no, I’m capturing via SDI…wait a moment, the markers don’t get across via SDI?
I have been using both bin and root. -

I was a little strong in that post. sorry.

correct- however the 32FPS footage will come in at 59.94 with this process.( it is supposed to)
You will need to run the offspeed material (at 59.94) thru the Frame Rate Converter within FCP using the 23.98 settings (which FCP version are you editing in???- the FRC plugins are unique to each version of FCP)Then conform the entire project to 25p after the edit is finished using Cinema Tools-

I have been using both bin and root. “Nope, what capture card are you using? In order to use the Panasonic FRC, you must capture in the DVCPro HD codec.
