DVCPro HD to HDV via Sony HVR-M15U
Posted by Evan Meszaros on November 23, 2008 at 1:30 pmHello. I have a feature film (96mins) in a DVCPro HD 720p sequence.
I want to screen the film in HD, but my only option is using the Sony HVR-M15U.I can make a new sequence with the HDV 1080i compressor, but what frame size should I use. (960×720 seems the obvious choice, but will the deck play that back?) Also, what frame rate? I don’t think the M15U plays back 24P… So If I make it 29.97, what should the key frame settings be?
All of this is probably an exercise in futility if I cannot record to the PDV 124N DVCAM tapes – but I assume THAT is at least possible.
I could really use some guidance, here…
Cheers,

Hi Evan,
Why is your only option?

November 23, 2008 at 9:43 pmI only have access to the M15U. My budget has bloated beyond compare, and this is the only favor I have left.
I have an HDCAM master, but it is being used at another festival…

November 24, 2008 at 2:01 amI don’t know what kind of screen or projector will you use, but can’t you play your movie from a laptop?

November 24, 2008 at 2:55 amIn my experience, 96mins from a laptop can be risky – between dropped frames and RT issues, it could be trouble for a live screening.

November 24, 2008 at 4:31 amHi Evan,
With a FW800 HD you shouldn’t have any problem playing DVCProHD or even ProRess.
Is a pity that you have to crunch DVCproHD to HDV for screening.

Make a new sequence, open sequence settings, click “load sequence presets” and select the HDV 1080i60 settings. Trying to ‘roll your own’ sequence settings is just asking for trouble. W/that said, I wouldn’t trust FCP to do the frame rate conversion in the timeline. If it was me I’d export a reference movie of your DVCPro HD timeline and use Compressor to do the conversion. All of this is probably an exercise in futility if I cannot record to the PDV 124N DVCAM tapes – but I assume THAT is at least possible. “
The M15U can take full-size DV tapes.-A

December 10, 2008 at 8:08 amI have the same issue. Mine is little more complicated though. Okay it sounds crazy but I edited an hour show using the entire footage coming out of Canon HG 10 AVCHD camera. Then I export the timeline as a QT movie file with the settings at 1920X1080 30p DVCPRO HD and ended up with 1 hr 40 GB QT file. It looks great on my 24 inch LCD. Then I made a DVD out of it. IT looked great. No jitter lines nothing.
Then I was asked to air this on a TV channel. My producer bought a Sony HVRM15AU to put this footage on an either DVCAM or HDV format.
What do I do? I guess I need to put the QT file on the final cut 6 on an HDV 1080i timeline (thats what the TV channel wants. 1080i) and render it. Then I print to video this footage on an HDV tape. Would it solve the problem? I never done this before and I have about two weeks left. The deck will arive tomorrow and I need to figre out a way to do this right. IT seems like I will be doing this again.
Should I bring AVCHD on an AIC timeline then export it out to 1920X1080 60i deinterlaced then print to tape? Should I stick with HDV instead of DVCAM output? What do you all think? Thanks.
