DVCPRO HD / Compressed / Color Shift?

Yes, there is a gamma shift. And you caused it. You took your HD footage and dropped it into an SD sequence and rendered…that changed your gamma. HD and SD have different color spaces. SD is 601 and HD is 700-something (pardon my lack of engineering knowledge), so the SD lighter.

And doing that downconvert and render is an added step that is unnecessary. Just export a Quicktime Movie (reference, self contained, doesn’t matter), take that into Compressor and choose the DVD BEST QUALITY that matches your timing, then into DVD SP to burn. There will be an option in DVD SP that you check (a 16×9 box) so that when you play the DVD on a 4:3 screen, it will be letterboxed. This is how I make ALL my DVDs from DVCPRO HD timelines.

No reason to do this. Compressor will scale down the footage for you. We do this all the time with DVCPro HD timelines. Send a Quicktime reference of the HD timeline to Compressor and make a standard DVD in Letterbox or center punch. Works extremely well.

Thank you. That makes sense. I knew it was something to do with the down convert. However, I down converted the DVCPRO HD footage because I am intercutting it with SD footage. How would I fix the gamma shift in a down converted sequence, since I need to mingle the HD and SD footage and then compress the whole sequence?

Sorry, I should have mentioned my mixed format post in the first post I made. I have made DVD’s straight from DVCPRO HD footage in the past. I just don’t usually inter mix the HD and SD footage in a SD sequence, then compress it out. This is where I’m having the color shift issue. Should I apply a gamma filter to my downconverted HD footage in the SD sequence?
