DVCPRO HD 720 24pn final output to 720 60p
Posted by Jim Kinsey on August 30, 2009 at 6:02 pmAnyone help me with this one……
Our television show is making the jump to the outdoor channel. My question is I have several shows shot in the DVCPRO HD codec 720 24Pn and would like to output a final sequence to 720 60p can this be done using something like a KONA 3 or KONA LHI without any noticed frame jitter….. All footage was shot on P2 cards and waiting log and transfer….. Am i screwed??

August 30, 2009 at 11:35 pmThis is just a playout setting on your Kona. Just like adding 2:3 pulldown for 24p to 60i. In your case, the pulldown is in whole frames, not in fields.
Edit in a 720 24p timeline, but set your playback to 720 60p.

August 31, 2009 at 3:39 amFirewire out from a 720/24 project is automatically converted to 60P. No card needed. It will be jittery during normal edit operation but is rock solid in edit to tape.

August 31, 2009 at 12:55 pmOk can I export using quicktime conversion to say 720 60P and have the show run smoothly. Seeing most of our shows have gone out for Closed captioning as a QT conversion DVCPRO 50 file. I am hoping to do the same and output the show to 720 60 file based for CC.. Will the KONA card help me as far as render times go? Or help me on the output for file based as a better image? Thanks again.

August 31, 2009 at 7:52 pmIf you want a file, no card or Firewire will help. Export your 24P sequence to a reference file. Bring that in and drop it into a 60P sequence. Export that out and have a nice day.

Most likely, your best option will be to output as above, using Kona’s adding pulldown to 720/59.94P, then recapture as such. Kona’s hardware solution for adding pulldown is reportedly better than most software options.
However, you might be able to use Compressor to make your file from the 720/23.976P file. Using Frame Controls, setting ON, then resize=fast, output fields=Progressive, deinterlacing=fast, rate conversion=fast (nearest frame). And making sure your video output is set to 59.94fps. It may be worth a shot, but I still think it’ll be less of a headache to output and recapture.
I wouldn’t use a 60P FCP sequence as I believe the added pulldown is jittery. I don’t know if this has been addressed, but you might easily see it if you drop a small clip in and render.

September 4, 2009 at 11:20 amWether through Kona, FCP or compressor, there is no “pulldown” being added. All simply repeat frames to get from 24 to 60.
