    Background –

This project is intended to be 720p/30, mixing P2 and Varicam footage. It’s a multiple camera shoot. The tapes were shot at 30P with free run TC, generally without stopping (to avoid TC breaks).

The clips were captured using the Panasonic 1400 deck via Firewire using the 720p/30 capture template that removes duplicate frames. Most of the clips came in perfectly and are 720p with a frame rate of 29.97, as expected. (The P2 material, at 720p/30pn, is fine.)

    The problem –

Some (25% – 30%) of the tape source clips are being interpreted by Final Cut as 59.94, or at least the Browser frame rate column lists them as 59.94. When these clips are played back, the audio plays at normal speed while the video plays back at double speed (the 2nd half of the clip is black). Interestingly the TC is also NDF on these clips, while the TC on the “proper” clips is DF.

These clips, when played back in Quicktime, play normally.

    I have tried:

    – importing the clips fresh, straight from the browser
    – trashing prefs
    – using MM to make a new project with offline clips, then reconnecting
    – modifying the clips’ TC to DF

Nothing works – the clips remain stubbornly 59.94 in FCP. This is a big project and there are hours of these clips. Any ideas (both for what might have caused the problem and what I can do now)?

    Many thanks –
    Michael

[Michael Rothenberg] “Any ideas (both for what might have caused the problem and what I can do now)?”

Any chance you captured bars from the tape on those clips?

Possibly – I didn’t do the capturing. Why?

I’m not sure, but you may be able to conform those clips in CINEMA TOOLS.

    Thank you very much!

I had never used Cinema Tools before, but muddled my way through a batch conform on the clips and it fixed most of them. The very last clip in the folder, for some reason, it slowed down the audio as well as the video. But the rest are now at 29.97 and seem to be working.

Thanks so much for your help.

Wonder if you can sync the original clip’s good audio to the conformed clip’s video. Then you’ll be set.

[Michael Rothenberg] “Possibly – I didn’t do the capturing. Why?”

Because the bars are recorded at a different frame rate than the video (it’s flagged at something like 1 or 2 fps, I can’t remember).

If you start your capture on the bars, the cadence gets screwed up and FCP will not record the proper frames.

Were the clips logged and captured or was it a big long capture for each tape?
