  • DVCPro HD 23.97 FCP PROJ to AVID HELP!!!!

Ok. So I have had a crazy couple of nights trying to get this project to work and am praying someone out there has run across these issues and can help.

I am bringing in a 23.97 720p project from FCP 6 via AUTOMATIC DUCK 4.0 to AVID SYMPHONY NITRIS 4.0

First off, it is to my understanding that our facility only has FCP 5.1.4, so the original project was archived and loaded into 5.1.4 before export through DUCK.

We set up the AVID project as 720p 23.97, as is the FCP project, imported OMF from DUCK, and started to attempt uprezzing the VariCam footage via the AJ HD1400 deck.

AVID refuses to uprez. We tried many different project settings and deck settings and nothing is working.

The deck was set up through HD SDI, but I read that we should be going through FIREWIRE for VARICAM FOOTAGE.

I can digitize from tape, but not batch capture.

The warning I get is that the clip is not 23.97 and it has to match the project in order to uprez.

I looked deeper into this and found that the clips were not shot 24p or 23.97, they were shot 60, or 59.97.

I got my hands on FCP 7 and looked at the original project and noticed the settings on the clips in the FCP project were 720p 23.97, but the TC on the clips went to 59.

I also duplicated a clip and changed the source name to see if it would batch capture without referencing original clip. It gave me a different warning:

    ERROR ON CLIP CAPTURE:
THE PICTURE ON THIS CIP “CLIP NAME”d WITHOUT PULLDOWN BUT THE SYSTEM IS CURRENTLY SET TO PULL DOWN TRANSFER. PLEASE SELECT “WITHOUT PULLDOWN” TO BATCH CAPTURE CLIP.

I figured this meant the settings in FILM/24P, so I went into FILM/24P settings and selected without pulldown and still could not batch capture.

I apologize if I am all over the place here, my mind is turning to mush.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.
    Shawn

The more I dig in and try to figure out what is wrong, the more it seems that the master clips are not in 23.97 and the original sequence is.
So it seems the clips were changed at some point to fit 23.976 timeline.

Because of this, Avid will not allow me to batch capture anything that does not match the project settings.
Anyone have any ideas? Any work around ideas or am I missing any simple settings in Avid, AUTOMATIC DUCK, FCP or the PANASONIC AJ HD1400 deck?

I set up to DECOMP the imported seq and went into EXPERT DECOMP to look at the clips and found that the clips were edited at 23.976, the target rate of the project is 23.976 but the source rate is 59.94

According to AVID 4.0 manual, I should be able to batch capture these clips in a project set up for the source rate, but it won’t let me batch capture this way either.

I am guessing that since it was not originally cut in AVID, and exported from FCP via AUTOMATIC DUCK, the clips are only recognized as the EDIT RATE of 23.976.

If this is so, I have no way of uprezzing the clips.

Any ideas on this out there?

Try bringing it in to an SD 23.98 sequence, then converting it in Avid to 720P 23.98. Or better yet, go to 1080P 23.98. (I hate 720P mastering)
