DVCHD Pro 720p24p issues with iMovie / Final Cut Express
hey guys,
So i shot a live event gig on an HVX200a. I shot in 720p24p and ingested the files as quicktime movies in Apple ProRes 422 HQ.
The client I delivered to is having a lot of problems with the files. He can’t play them properly in quicktime (no sound) and can’t import them into iMovie or Final Cut Express to edit with.
I know if he wants to edit with either of those programs, he needs to convert the footage from Apple ProRes 422 HQ @ 720p24p to Apple Intermediate Codec @ 720p30p. Is there a good free application that can do this?
He needs the footage quickly and i want to avoid having to convert it myself in final cut and have to fedex him a new hard drive with the data, so i’m trying to figure out a way he can do it on his end.
He’s on a mac, and for some reason he cannot watch these clips properly in Quicktime Pro? I’ve never experienced this but i also have FCP 2.0 Studio on my machine and am assuming it came with codecs he doesn’t have.

Hi Jordan,
I think that your client will be able to open the Prores files just installing QT Pro.
Now even Windows users can read Prores just with the last QT version (and I guess the Pro license).

Raf is right, with the latest QT 7.6.x he should at least be able to SEE them. But DVCPRO HD, HDV, PRORES are not formats he can work with in iMovie. They will need to convert them to AIC…and if they can view the QT files, then he can export out of that to the proper format.

The DVCPRO HD, HDV and ProRes codecs only comes with FCP. If your computer does not have FCP installed, it cannot view these quicktime files. It doesn’t matter if it is a Mac or PC, without FCP installed, you cannot view these files.
If you need to view ProRes material, you can download the ProRes decoder (mac and windows compatible) for ProRes

If your footage was captured as DVCRO HD you can buy the Calibrated DVCPRO HD decoder:

If you have MXF files from a P2 camera and you need to view the footage on a computer without FCP, you can download P2CMS from Panasonic:

Or you need the other party to compress the footage into a format your computer can play, like H.264.
