  • DV25 timeline to HDCAM?

I worked on a project in a standard NTSC 29.97 DV timeline, 4:3 aspect ratio. Turns out this little film has been accepted at numerous film festivals around the country. One of the festivals is accepting screening copies only on HDCAM tape, meaning I have to either lay this off to HDCAM tape or uprez it or something. A local post house has an HDCAM deck, and they work in FCP. What is the proper way to do this? Export my DV timeline and let FCP (or After Effects) upconvert it to HDCAM? Play the DV timeline out directly to the deck… will the deck upconvert it on the fly and record to HDCAM? I’m not sure what the post house uses, but I just took delivery of a Kona LHi card which upconverts in real time (but I don’t have an HDCAM deck, etc.). Any thoughts or tips on doing this correctly? Many thanks in advance.

You need to see what the post house can do. You have to ask them. The Kona LHi will upconvert as you output to HDCAM tape…as will the Kona 3 and Matrox MXO2…all via hardware. The Decklink cards will to, but that is software.

But if you are taking this to a post house, you have to ask them how they will be doing this. If it were me, I’d play out the DVCAM timeline to HDCAM, upconverting as it outputs. Not as good as doing a proper online at full res, but what you can do in a pinch.

Or take to a dub house and have them use a terranex to upconvert and dub to HDCAM. That is the better way.

THanks for the suggestions, Shane. As we speak, I am looking at the DV 25 timeline being output through my new Kona LHi card. I have a 20″ Sony PVM-20L5 monitor, and am upconverting the timeline to 1080i, which the monitor can display. Have to say, I am shocked at how good it looks…
