I’m stumped on this, I have captured with Vegas 11, DV mini tape (AVI), here is the properties of the captured clip :

    Format : AVI
    Format/Info : Audio Video Interleave
    Commercial name : DV
    Format profile : OpenDML
    File size : 9.09 GiB
    Duration : 43mn 34s
Overall bit rate mode : Constant
Overall bit rate : 29.9 Mbps
    TAPE : Victoria
    TCOD : 1671863526667
    TCDO : 1698005642667
    VMAJ : 4
    VMIN : 0
    STAT : 78348 0 3.429810 1
    DTIM : 0 0

    Video
    ID : 0
    Format : DV
    Codec ID : dvsd
    Codec ID/Hint : Sony
    Duration : 43mn 34s
    Bit rate mode : Constant
    Bit rate : 24.4 Mbps
Encoded bit rate : 28.8 Mbps
    Width : 720 pixels
    Height : 480 pixels
    Display aspect ratio : 16:9
    Frame rate mode : Constant
    Frame rate : 29.970 fps
    Standard : NTSC
    Color space : YUV
    Chroma subsampling : 4:1:1
    Bit depth : 8 bits
    Scan type : Interlaced
Scan order : Bottom Field First

    Compression mode : Lossy
    Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 2.357
    Stream size : 8.76 GiB (96%)
    Encoding settings : wb mode= / white balance= / fcm=auto focus

now when i start the project with match settings, i choose the deinterlace method to none (tried blend and interpolate too).

then when i render to MPEG2 DVD Arcitect Widescreen template there are options for Field Order, if i set to Lower Field first and then playback the DVD on players I get jittery motion movement.. tried even CBR of 8,000 or VBR rates of minimum 4,200,000.

If I set the Field Order to NONE or Upper i get much better results still not as good as source but then again source is 28Mbps compared to max 8MBps on dvd right?

But my question is what should this be set to to get the best results to DVD.. should it not be smooth pans/movement like the DV source when connected to the TV? Do I have to deinterlace the source footage first or something?

Leave things at (for the most part) the default settings and you’ll be fine.
Due to the length of your video, I would use a CBR of 8,000,000.

Hey Mike, thanks for the response but it comes out bad when I leave it as default, the render template leaving it at Lower Field First seems to make a difference when playing back on DVD players. Why is this? Its not one player tested on 3 even on pc you can tell the jittery pans .. and its smooth as butter on DV source. If I change the render template to None (progressive) it’s better but still not as clean. So I know I definitely wont leave it on Lower Field First.

Joe, I don’t know what to tell you.
I’ve been using this template for several years, have produced hundreds of DVDs with it and never had any complaints.

Last night I decided to try rendering a 10 sec clip and it did work out fine with Lower Field First. Upper Field gave the jittery results on panning.. and None was ok but not as smooth as Lower. So I must have messed up the naming of the original post, sorry and thanks for your help. Makes sense I should use the same as source!

No problems at all Joe. I’m glad that you got things resolved.
