    Hi all,

I am trying to work out the best way to get a DV feature to HD, given access I have to particular equipment.

    This is the situation:

    * DV NTSC 23.98p advanced timeline and original footage.

    * It is not practical to go back and redigitize this footage at uncompressed or pro-res.

    * I plan to use Apple Color to grade. Planning on rendering out of Color with Pro Res HQ.

    * I have free access to Kona 3, Teranex Mini & D5 deck.

I am trying to find out the best way to get the film onto D5. I presume I should be trying to get to 1080p 23.98 on the D5.

As far as I can work out the Teranex Mini will not help me if I need to get to 1080p 23.98. It does not seem to do 23.98 fps at all (only 59.94) and will convert to either 1080i or 720p (59.94).

Now, to confuse matters a little, I have previously used the Mini to do noise reduction on this same project when making a SD Digibeta dub. Obviously Digibeta is a 29.97i format only. I just outputted from my 23.98 sequence from FCP, through the Kona3 then the Terranex Mini and onto digibeta and it just worked.

I’m not sure if this means a viable option would be to go from my 23.98sequence through the Kona and then through the Teranex Mini at 1080i 59.97 onto D5.

The other alternative is to forget the Teranex Mini altogether and just have the Kona do the conversion to HD. Here I am also a little confused about the options. In the Primary (Native) Format dropdown menu of my Kona 3 Control Panel I can chose either 525i29.97 or 525i23.98. Now, I know that DV23.98p is not true 23.98p – it is actually 29.97 which displays at 23.98p using the advanced pulldown scheme. When I go to D5 HD do I then move into true 23.98p? If so, should my Primary (Native) Format be 525i29.97 and my Secondary (Converted) Format be 1080sf23.98? (by the way, the option in the Secondary (Converted) Format for 1080p is greyed out and cannot be selected. I’m not sure what the 1080sf23.98 format is. Should I convert to this format through the Kona, but then select 1080p on my D5 deck?

Also, when I convert in Color from DV NTSC 23.98 to Pro Res HQ, does this affect the advanced pulldown in any way?

Sorry about the complicated post, but this workflow is starting to get me in knots!!!!

Hope someone out there can help!

First you need to remove the advanced pulldown in all your DV media. But it sounds like you have since you’re actually editing in a 23.98 timeline? In which case it’s true 23.98.

At that point you have the Kona upconvert to 1080/2398. You native format is 525/23.98 and your upconvert is 1080psf/23.98

I’ve never seen the output of a Teranex mini. They’re supposed to be the best gear for upconversion hands down. But the Kona does a very respectable job. Don’t expect miracles. DV to HD is going to look a little disappointing.

    Thanks Charlie…..

    That helps me somewhat……

Also…..do you know the difference between 23.98P and PsF?

I also have the option on the D5 deck of choosing 23.98P or PsF….not sure which one I should be using….

choose psf. it’s basically a progressive signal split into two fields for transport between machines/decks/NLE’s. It’s more compatible with workflows that also process regular interlaced media (like 1080i, NTSC, PAL, whatever). It’s pretty much the standard for all HDCAM and D5 delivery for television.

    Hi Charlie,

    Ok….that kind of explains it…..

Once I have the D5 master for this project, we will be making HDcam dubs at a dub house for screening at film festivals (digital projection). Given that, should we be using PsF? Also, when we make the HDcam dubs, should we tell the dub house to make PsF or 1080P HDCAM masters (for digital projection in theatres)?

    Thanks….

In my experience, EVERYONE uses psf all the time. You’ll want to ask specifically for the festivals, but I would guess Psf would be the norm for most digital projectors that accept HD-SDI.

    I output 1080psf 23.98 to HDCAM…that is the standard.
