  • DV blowup to HD via software, suggestions, plug-ins?

I have a job comming in shot on a DVX-100b at 24p. The client is going to give me a TIFF sequence of the entire feature for blow-up to HD. We are cropping the top and bottom to fit the 1.78 ratio.

The client saw Iraq in Fragments and wants the blow-up to be of the same quality. We had that show come through here pre-release and I got to watch it off of the High-Def tape, it was a great blow-up. I heard the guys up in Seattle that did it in After Effects, and I’m guessing they used a combination of plug-ins to make the blowup look to so good (free of most artifacts).

I have a few options for software to use: After Effects, Shake, Final Cut, Motion, or our Avid DS Nitris (I’d like to stay off of the Avid if possible, don’t want to tie it up with the render). I’m expecting to upgrade to After Effects 7 and buy some plug-ins to do this, but before I do I’d like to know of any suggestions people might have about doing this in Final Cut or Motion and any filters that are out there that will help the blowup look as good as possible. I’ve heard of some RE:Vision plug-ins that have good noise reduction, is there anything like this that would help remove DV artifacts and noise? I’m really looking to get rid of any blockiness and jagged edges without noticeably softening the image.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks for your time,
    -Matt

    Matt,

First and foremost, is the client providing a textless version for you to work from? If they are not providing a textless version you might as well give up immediately, as you will never be able to create an acceptable HD upconversion.

Since you already have Shake & AE, make a test. Create a clips reel. Use 3-5 seconds of what look like the most problematic shots. Make the reel 3-5 minutes in length. Run it through Compressor, Shake & AE. Then play the results on your HD monitor & see which looks best.

for what it’s worth, Boris now has an up-rez filter in it’s Continuum package:

I think as Arnie. Try the “Convert” in the Timing tab of Shake, or any of the 9 filters that Shake have for resizing (in some of the transform nodes). Some of them are better blow-up, some for down-size.

as far as I know compressor is using shakes algorithms to upscaling

this is fine for what you need I would imagine

make sure to set the frame controls to a suitable setting e.g.
resize filter best (will take longer)
click on adaptive details as this is to do with scaling if deinterlacing and make sure to get a balance between details level and anti alias if doing this (good explanation in shake manual basically sharpening edges and details level is this and anti alias is softening the rolloff)

Thanks for all of the suggestions guys. Looks like I’ll be doing a bunch of tests!

    I’m doing tests also.

I heard that the best way is to use tape to hardware blowup.
I didn’t test this yet, but i don’t know. My hardware is Blackmagic Multibridge Pro, and I would have to connect via component. This analogic loss is not a issue?
    Someone have tested this?

Compressor is doing good job with frame controls. But it’s annoying not to have Frame Control Preview in the Preview window, you have to render to see.
