We use FCP versions 4.5 and 5 as offline edits for high definition product. We digitise in at DV resolution from a variety of HD sources through Kona LS cards. Sadly, since DV has a native frame size of 720 x 576, and HD has a frame size of 1920 x 1080 any camera moves that are created in the offline have to be recreated in the online – using up valuable online time. Does anyone know of a compression codec that allows native 16:9 (non anamorphic) capture so that the 16:9 coordinates can transfer from the offline to the online? Or does anyone have a clever solution?!

    Thanks.

why would you digi at DV res when you’re capturing HD? It’s pretty easy to down res if you need to but working in a DV resolution takes away the look you want for HD.

Thanks for the response. We dig at DV resolution because we use Final Cut as an offline tool to cut the editorial content of the programme – once that is complete we go in to ‘online’ and conform in to FCP just the final edited sequence at HD resolution. Since the average shooting ratio is approximately 25-30 to 1 it is not practical to capture all the rushes at HD resolution as it will eat up our storage resources.
