I’m having a very perplexing problem in FCP 7.0.3. It appears to be introducing duplicate frames into clips that I am importing. The clips are 24fps H264 quicktimes. They play without issue in Quicktime 10.0, Quicktime 7.6.6 and Frame Cycler 2009 Release SP3. But when I play back the clips in FCP, a frame near the head of the shot is often duped, rippling picture throughout the rest of the shot. The duration stays consistent so the last frame of picture is essentially missing, and sound does not appear to be affected so synch is being thrown off by a frame. This problem occurs upon opening clips in the viewer so it’s not an issue caused by the sequence frame rate or anything.

I also tried to export a new copy of one of the clips from Quicktime but upon importing the new copy into FCP, the problem persisted even though it was not visible present when playing back the new copy in Quicktime.

    I’m totally stumped. Any ideas?

    Thanks!

Have you tried transcoding your h264 files to another codec like ProRes and see if the problem is still there? h264 is a terrible codec to edit with in Final Cut and it’s always best to transcode first.

Yes, I have, and the problem persists. And though H264 is terrible for editing, I see this problem when I open the clip in the Viewer, before it ever touches the timeline.

I also just found this thread on the subject:

Apparently, QT might be the problem. I might have to downgrade to ver 7.5…

Let us know if it works as I haven’t had these issues before. Trying to replicate it here without any luck.

I’ve never had this issue before either and have worked with h264 frequently so I think it’s some kind of codec issue that pops up somewhat arbitrarily, perhaps related to the specific workflow used to create the particular media I’m using? Who knows.

I don’t think we’re going to go the route of downgrading QT at the moment, first we’ll try using a different codec to create the media that we’re using. If that doesn’t work, well, I’m sure I”ll be back here to talk about it!

    Thanks for your help,
