Dubbing an HDcamSR 24P to HDcam 25P
Hi All,
Could someone enlighten me re the process or equipment necessary to make a 25P dub from my HDCam Sr master, which is in 24P. I am going to ask a friend to do this dub for me, but first I’d like to be a bit more educated.

They will need a Terranex or other high end converting hardware designed for this process. This isn’t a simple deck-to-deck dub. Not many post houses and dub facilities have this equipment either, so thinking that a friend would…unless they run a dub house.

Well, I do have a friend who runs a dub house, but the person i was going to ask works at a big trailer house with a very big equipment room, so I can ask him also. The other possibility I was wondering is… the same person who created my HDCam SR master from FCP may still have my project on his HD. However the sequence in FCP is in 24p. Would it be an easier approach if they didn’t have Terranex or the like?

No, I do not have to maintain 24p as a matter of fact it was shot and cut on 25p but was mastered on 24. so getting the 4% shift would bring it back to the right length and pitch.

Well, if you have the file you can convert it using Cinema tools…mind you that means that your audio will be 4% faster and your show timing will be off. This is a frame for frame conversion.
No capture card can output 24p to 25p well. You really need the Terranex or Snell/Wilcox.

My understanding from a local dubbing house is that SR machines CAN play back 24fps as 25fps while correcting for pitch if the tape was recorded on SR to begin with.
There will be a four percent speed difference and you’d need a 25fps machine to record the output.

Sony HDcams do a poor job of of on the fly pitch correction. MPEX3 or Pitch N Time are the only software solutions that I recommend.
If the correct length and pitch is 25 then the 24 master can be run at 25 without pitch correction and an HDCam dub made.
