DSLR to record video and edit in Vegas Pro
I am thinking on acquire a DSLR camera around $650, bearing in mind to record video as well. On this price range I found many cameras able to record in MOV (H.264) and a few ones that record in AVCHD.
a) I have some experience on Vegas Pro 11/12 handling AVCHD, but nothing about MOV (H.264). Is MOV (H.264) a good format to record video and to edit into Vegas Pro? In comparison to AVCHD is there any (dis)advantage?
b) I have used a simple camcorder JVC GZ-HM30 to take footage (AVCHD). I am considering that a DSLR camera (like Sony A57 or Nikon D3200) would provide better footage than my current camcorder JVC GZ-HM30 (since the camcorder is very simple). Does it make sense? I mean, is a DSLR camera handy to record video as well?
c) I have in mind to acquire either Sony A57 or Nikon D3200. If one have any suggestion about DSLR camera models which can record great footage (around $650), please let me know…

DSLRs in my opinion, do not replace a real video camera. I have the Nikon D7000 and experience with other DSLRs that take video. They are great for studio set ups and in controlled environments. But the lack of reliable autofocus and view finder make them unsuitable for event shoots. Sure you can get follow focus rigs and magnifiers for your chimp screen, but I still find them difficult to use on the fly.
As far as compatibility with Vegas, I’ve had no issues importing the files in any of the formats.—————

Besides what you pointed out, I should say other problem I found is that the DSLR are limited to a short time of recording, around 30 minutes. Considering my main usage is to record interviews that takes around 2 hours, the only way to go seems to be through a camcorder indeed.

Nikon DSLR cameras are great for us to take photos and record MOV footages when we are travelling or spending holidays. If you have recorded some vivid videos with D4, D5100, D3200, etc, you may have the need to edit Nikon MOV footage in Sony Vegas Pro before sharing with others. However, the 1080p H.264 footage is not easy to be edited in Vegas Pro, it takes long time to render, and you can not edit Nikon H.264 MOV files in Vegas Pro smoothly.
*Personally I perfer a full HD AVCHD camera.
