    Hello all,
I have recently bought and installed a Kona 2 card. Since then, weird stuff has been happening in the system. The first thing that happened was that I could not play back anything at all from Final Cut 4.5, without dropping frames and locking up the system. After that, I started to get weird artifacts (small pixelated squares and lines) right before the computer would lock up completely. Then in addition to all of this, the display would shut down by itself when I would try something simple, such as scroll down a Safari window. This started to happen a lot, until I changed the resolution on the monitors to something lower. I still get the dropped frames problem, although the G5 doesn’t lock up as often. But now I have discovered that in Lightwave, the computer does lock up when I move objects. Also, If I ran a memory test in single user mode, after a few minutes, small yellow artifacts would show up on the screen, and would keep adding up until you couldn’t read the on-going test anymore, and the computer would lock up.
In any case, I figured my problem might be the video card, due to the fact that all the PCI cards are pretty darn close now, and they must be heating the place up. What changed was the fact that I added the kona2 card, taking up the last slot available. This is only a theory of mine, and I am by no means an expert, so I’m begging for help and ideas here.
This is what I got, in case it makes a difference. Starting from the top: Kona2, ATTO SCSI Controller, Ethernet, ATI 9800. 1.5 RAM, dual 2 ghz G5.
Has anyone else run into something like this? I shouldn’t be dropping frames when it is reading from a SCSI HUGE System, at a DV rate.
    Please help…

your card slots are wrong. The Kona and the ATTO must be in different busses, and your Ethernet is in the PCI-X slot. You did not say what ATTO card you had – the UL3D or UL4D. REmove the Ethernet card (or Firewire card, or whatever it is). Put the ATTO in slot 3 or 4, and put the AJA Kona in the PCI-X slot (if you have a UL4D, reverese what I just said). The PCI-X slot is the last slot, furthest away from the AGP Graphics card.

Now try it. If you still have issues, your HUGE Firmware might need to be updated. You can download the AJA Kona System Test to test your HUGE drive performance – you should get WAY OVER 120 mb/sec with your HUGE using the AJA Kona System test.

Now, as for your Ethernet or Firewire card that you “really really need in there” – it is probably slowing down your buss speed, which is causing this problem. Need another ethernet card – buy a MAC Quad that comes with 2 ethernet ports.

Actually, that is the way I have it set up. starting from the bottom, AGP, Firewire, ATTO UL4D, and lastly the KONA2 at the top. And sorry, I did mean Firewire card and not Ethernet card. I needed the firewire card, because I also use at the same time a G-Raid and a Lacie drive. Let me know if I’m still missing something. Thanks.

PULL OUT THE FIREWIRE CARD NOW and try it. I don’t give a crap if you need it, many of these FW cards slow down the buss speed. We can discuss a fix for you, once you yank out your FW card, and try it again.

[Bob Zelin] “PULL OUT THE FIREWIRE CARD NOW and try it.”

Agreed. I run two G-RAIDs and two LaCie BDE’s plus a single FW400 drive and I don’t use any Firewire cards in the machine.

Ensure your cards are in the right order and ensure your drive is clean and de-fragmented. What speeds are you getting with the AJA System Test?
