my energy saver settings are on “always on” or “never” and i have put drives to sleep off.

I can tell that drives do spin down, because if i play a timeline and it plays media on a drive that has not been accessed in a while, i get a buffer underrun. if i replay the same section right away, it plays fine. is this because drives are idleing or spinning down or what? when im done with this project im going to raid my setup, but i cant in the middle of this project. any suggestions? thanks

is it an internal drive or an external drive, if it is an external drive then the drive it self may have a built in feature that spins the drive down when not in use.

Here’s a link to a little utility app. called Spindown Fix. This should cure your drive(s) going to sleep before you want them to. NOTE: The author of the program cautions that the program has not been tested on anything more recent than OS 10.4.2., probably because it’s usually not needed on machines with the latest OS upgrades.
