Drive Arrays for Red
I’ve been looking at various options with the CalDigit and G-Tech arrays for setting up a FCP system that is future proofed somewhat. I want to be able to support 2k workflow, but I need some input from the forum as to what that means when it comes to hardware to support it.
At what point does it become important to be able to sustain error-free 2k playback if the edit is locked using ProRes transcodes? How are you delivering 2K finished product? I am assuming some type of external portable drive or am I way off base? I currently output HD-SDI in real-time to XDcamHD discs with a Windows based system and it’s obviously important that in that case, the drive array can keep up.

Recently I worked on a RED project that was transcoded to ProRes4444 2k files. It played off a WD FW800 drive. My final renders played of an Internal RAID which easily supports 1920 x 1080 uncompressed 10 bit but I was happy that the ProRess 2Ks played off the FW800 without issue. The drive was not full and I was working at 25fps so 24 would in theory be easier.
Keep an eye on USB3 if Mac bother to support it. (see https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/1082905
esata has caused some grief particularly with certain cards and drivers when OS updates happen.
