  • Drawing a line around a shape…

Posted by Dennis Dean on June 24, 2009 at 2:49 pm

I’ve done this using a particle emitter to trace the outline of a shape (my client’s name – just four letters) – but what would I use if I wanted to trace a pencil or ink line – so that as the shape is being followed, we begin to see the outline of the letters? (These are block letters merged -kerned- just enough for the edges to touch and create a single shape). The end result is this will look like the particle emitter (above) is drawing the line…

    thanks!

Are you saying the text should look like it was written by a pen or pencil?

Pen, pencil, computer drawn line, quill, just needs to be thin, as opposed to thicker. We’re trying to simulate a process called wire EDM, where a thin, electrically charged wire cuts precision shapes in metal. Very precision stuff – for surgical instruments, etc. So – thru the magic of video – we’re going to cut their logo out of metal.

Build the shape using the bezier tool (B). Then apply the Write On Behavior under: Behaviors/Shape.

I forgot to mention, make sure the shape is set to Outline instead of Fill in the Style section.
