  • Dragging segments to the timeline?

Posted by Manning on September 26, 2007 at 5:10 pm

Hope this doesn’t sound silly – it’s a huge nuisance.

Out of the blue (starting today), when I drag a group of segments from the browser to the timeline, they will get randomly re-arranged out of numeric sequence (Segment 1, Segment 2, etc.) when they settle in the timeline.

Before, and logically so, they would display in the timeline in the proper order, lowest number to highest, left to right.

Any ideas why this function suddenly started to misbehave?

Any insight would be much appreciated!

Did you arrange them in a left to right in a downward stair-step pattern? They have to be successively lower. The next row has to be lower than the previous one for everything to work properly.

Hey Kevin, I’m afraid I’m competely lost with your reply. I don’t know what you mean by a downward stair step pattern.

One of my editing workflows is to use capture now for the entire tape and run DV start/stop detect to break it into segments. I then expand the captured tape in the browser window so it shows all of the segments. I bring the entire tape to the timeline by selecting all of the segments, usually around 80, so numbered segments 1-80 in the browser –> dropped into timeline.

All of a sudden, in projects I open today, the segments get completely jumbled and rearranged when I drag and drop them into the timeline. And it’s completely random….Every time I do it, the clips are in a different order. Before, they’d line up numerically, same as they showed in the browser, in perfect sequence and unbroken timecode.

There is no reason I can see why this is happening.

Hope that was clearer and thanks for trying to help!!!

Ah, went to the FCP manual and I see what you are trying to tell me to do. I don’t think that’s the problem. I’ve been performing this exact workflow for at least a year and never had it screw up the order of clips until yesterday.

My segments are just listed in column view, no thumbnails. There’s nothing to arrange. I should just be able to drag and drop and have them stay in numeric order.

No clue why this is happening.

Hey, this is a long time ago, but i figured i would post. I’ve been having the same problem ever since upgrading to FCP 6. Other people tell me they don’t have this problem. Have you figured it out?

It’s a major hassle, i think my workflow is similar to yours and this is a monkeywrench.
