Downsized Video
I’m working with Premiere Elements 2.0 and when I add an AVI clip to my timeline, it appears with black bars around the edges both in the timeline and in the preview window. Other AVI files I created previously work fine. I created these using FRAPS but I’ve created other files using FRAPS that work fine. Any idea what Premiere is doing?

You probably accidentally created the clips at a smaller frame size. Select the clip in the Project Panel and see what the properties are of the “good” vs the “bad” clips.

Well, the “bad” clips are actually bigger than the “good” clips. Bad=1280×800; Good=1064×800. The problem seems to be in the scaling. When I unclick “Scale to frame size”, it takes the middle section of the clip as normal, but when I re-check the “scale” option, it cuts it way down and adds the all-around black bars.

Both of those frame sizes are non-standard as far as video goes. So choose the one you like the results for.

How do I scale a clip to a specific size? Because the smaller clips are scaling fine but the big clips scale w/ the black bars.

You can adjust the scale property in the motion effect controls panel. select the clip in the timeline and then change the size parameter to see how it looks in the program monitor.
