I am capturing and downconverting HD footage shot on the Varicam into my Avid. The director wants to shoot in 24p to have that ‘film look’. We will be using the Pana 1200A or 1700 deck to do the digitizing and downconversion to Standard Def. Someone at the deck rental place told me to make sure we shot at 23.98 FPS (not 24p FPS) or I would not be able to down convert the HD signal into my Avid.

    Is this true?

Yes for NTSC editorial this is true.

Verify in the Varicam vtr menu that the frequency rate is set to 59.94 not 60.00 hz.

If set to 59.94 when the camera is at 24P actual frame rate is 23.98 whereas when set to 60.00 24P is actually 24.00.

    Good luck,

    Tony Salgado
