  • Downconvert HD to SD and retain CC ? FCP 7

Posted by Alan Callaghan on October 1, 2009 at 9:22 pm

    OK!

I was able to capture a spot on a HD tape and keep the C.C. In FCP 7 using the KONA LHE card.

Here’s the catch, I need to take the same spot on the HD tape, and down convert it to SD and KEEP the C.C. It doesn’t work! When I down convert through the KONA it loses the C.C. I then took the HD clip, and used Compressor to down convert it to SD, I checked the quicktime and it says there is a Caption on the stream, but when I play the file it doesn’t pop up (like it does on the HD clip).

    ANY Ideas??

    thanks!

C.C. – I guess that you mean closed captioning and not color correction.

I am not surprised that a software down convert or using the Kona doesn’t carry the closed captioning. You might need to down convert tape to tape with a hardware converter that passes or reinserts the captioning correctly.

You should be able to if you hit the ‘VANC’ button in the control panel.

The VANC works with the HD capture. It has no effect on the SD.

    Hi Alan,
When you capture HD video with closed captions through the KONA card, the closed captioning data is stored as a QuickTime DTV 608/708 track. This track only works for HD video. The KONA cards or Compressor do not currently preserve this data during down-convert, nor can they process this data into the QuickTime 608 captions track needed for standard definition.

The AJA FS1 can do this to baseband video (prior to capture) as can some other devices.

At this time the only software which can read this track and convert it to a standard definition captioning track is MacCaption by CPC.

This page has some more information about closed captioning workflows with the KONA cards: https://cpcweb.com/hdtv/aja_workflow.htm

    Hope this helps,

I’m totally thinking about the FS-1. Sorry about that error.
